montana or bust! (got back saturday)
« on: October 18, 2009, 06:53:01 PM »
well,
everything is packed up and ready to rip! leaving on thursday after work. Got the motor on the drift boat which should get us up and down the mighty missouri river. threw the shotgun on for some pheasants, as well as the trusty trout rod. Game plan is to glass the hell out of the 60 river miles that we are floating. The 10 day forecast is calling for some great hunting weather, little rain, little snow, partly cloudy, highs of 50-55 degrees and lows of 25-28 (not necessarily in that order) :chuckle:
I am pretty anal about getting my gear in order and this hunt found me ripping everything out of my sitka pack at least 4 times and rearranging things.
My hunting partner and I will be on the river for 10 days if need be. Probably won't be handing out any halloween candy this year ;)

Sounds like a great hunt ahead of you. Be careful and take lots of pictures for those of us stuck here in Washington this year. My brother is also going to Montana this week.

Have a great time and a great hunt! Wish I was going!

I had a safe, fun and rewarding trip. Nothing to brag about really. We floating 47 river miles and it was pretty demanding. I would love to say I hunted hard as hell, but that would be a lie! What I did do though, is row my a$$ of and got to do a little bit of hunting! They muley numbers are down on the breaks and have been for the last 2 years. We seen a total of 6 bucks. Day 1, one partner past on a small fork and ended up shooting a whitetail doe on the last day. Day 3, other partner shot a 21" 4x4 that was bedded down in a cave. I missed a small 3pt. on day 4. It was a quick decision situation and I thought he was at 300yds. He ended up being 330. That was the last buck I seen. I ended up filling my tag on a muley doe literally 4 miles up river from our pull out. I just didn't want to give up on the bucks, but time was up and I decided to come back with meat. We ended up breaking camp and resetting it up every day, after rowing 7-10 miles.
I had high hopes of this hunt, even a couple locals told me that the numbers are down in the area.
I did learn a lot about the area. I will be going back for sure in the future. Next time it will be with a jet sled and a base camp!
If anyone needs info on a future trip on the mighty missouri, let me know. I also seen some MASHER rocky mt. rams!
I'll post some picks when I figure out how.....I broke my second camera this year >:(

Thanks for the report. Sounds like a fun method of hunting. Surprised you did not see more animals.
I fish the Missouri and thought about floating while hunting like you did. Was thinking of doing it by canoe. Might pm you for info

I'll hand taylormade info to you, so pm me when ever you feel the need! You would not find me dead in a canoe, let alone float the missouri with one. but to each his own (I hate the damn things) :chuckle:
