our mobile slaughter guy that is a good friend of mine uses a 22 mag for killing beef we killed 2 yeaterday and one was at about 30 yards after he shot the first one. i have shot a few i would say 100 yards should still kill a yote with a well placed bullet. also i got a new choke this last year to hunt turkeys with and man that thing love 4buck also for yotes and etc it keeps all the pellets on a paper plate to 35 yards :yike: and still about half at 50yard i have shot one this year that was just over 50 yards hauling balls after she watched me shoot her boyfriend at about 30 yards.

Out to 100 yards I think you will be OK, but past that it may be hit or miss knocking them down.   :twocents:
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

I've been shooting the 22 mag for 24 years now and have done quite a bit of problem wildlife work envolving critters much larger than coyotes and can tell you for a fact that a Federal 50gr HP bullet should completly penetrate a coyotes rib cage at 50-85 yards. (Completly through broadside) If you go through the shoulders the bullet will most likely be on the off side under the hide. That 50gr bullet will NOT expand at all but will deform if it hits bone but not much. The Federal 50gr has alot more energy than the 40gr HP that most of you guys are shooting with. Beyond 80 yds 1st choice would be a head shot or go through both shoulders. I must admit I personally have not shot any coyotes with my mag but I wouldn't think twice. BANG YELP FLOP.

I've shot a dozen or better yotes with my 22 mag, but it's been several years now.  Let's just be clear that the difference between the 22 and 22 mag are significant.  But the short story is that I would call my effective range with my 22 mag at 125 yards.  Your drop will be more than you realize, if memory serves me correctly, it was around 8-10 inches or so.

I've had this discussion with a few guys and I scratch my head some, but I've NEVER had a yote shot with that 22 mag take a step.  Every one was bang flop, yet a heart shot yote with the 223 will spin or death run.... :dunno:

Generally speaking, a 40 grain .22 Mag has the same velocity at about 120 yards that a 40 grain .22lr has at the muzzle.

:twocents: Shot placement is key and choose a good bullet.  There are jacketed bullets and 50 grain bullets available for the .22 Mag.  I think those light 30 grain pills are best reserved for very small game where penetration is not so much an issue.

+1 on what bobcat said.  We have an ethical duty to dispatch humanely.

OK, I will use my wife's .243 if I hunt an area that might have longer distance shots.  Thanks for the tip on the 50 grain bullets.

I agree that we have to dispatch game humanely, but coyote are Varmints. Do we always skin each animal for our use? Don't get me wrong i like a nice pelt hanging on the wall, but isn't a good coyote a dead one? I don't own a 22mag or 17hmr, i use buck shot or an 06 so they are gona be dead when i shoot them. Its been my experience that the more you thin them out the more that grow, no matter how they are killed...

In my opinion any one of you that choose to use the 22 mag on coyotes should go out of your way to buy some 50 gr Federal HP your down range effective kill zone will take a jump.

I have never shot one with the federal 50's I have never been able to find them. I have shot several with the winchester 34 grain supreme and its performance was mediocre at best.

Bofire, do you use the same bullet you would for deer (100 gr)?  Or do you drop the bullet weight for increased velocity?

I've killed em out to 125 yards with excellent results, kinda like the hammer of thor. Though I do have the luxury of having a bait pile, at a known distance. I use federal premium, 30 grain jacketed hollow points. Between the 17 HMR & 22 Mag, the ONLY simalarity is they share the same case, thats it!! The 22 magnum kills a hellava lot better than the 17. Here's a 75 yard shot on a coyote with the above mentioned ammo, imagine what it would do to his enjine room......

I use 80 grain for both. I shoot the cheap Federal blue box ammo in it. groups really well, I killed a deer with it 200yards flipped it right over! killed lots of yotes, it is as flat as a 22-250 hits twice as hard! Puts yotes down hard.
I like it cause here we can call bear/cougar or coyote at the same stand.
Carl
I also use 223 and 22-250 for calling depends on my mood and the laws, but the 243 does it all.

52.5 grains H414, 55 grain Nosler BT will net ya about 4 grand, stupid accurate, stupid fast, and'll give you exit wounds like this. Obviously I don't care about the hides.....grin..

i will say i shot a yote on the way home this last summer @ 75-80 yards with my walther P22 pistol... Luck? dropped it right away!
Story:
so i was on my way home with the family last summer and my wife was driving ( Me Crazy ) i mean the CAR! :chuckle: as we came up on the field by our driveway i seen eyes! I yell... its a yote! so my wife turned the car so he was the headlights. as i fumble threw her purse trying to find her P22. i realize he is running. so my wife backs up and gets him back in the lights. I barked at him and he stopped as i took aim! i let one fly, followed by a few more and down he went. he dropped 75-80 yards off the road. he was just a little guy but the 22 did the job. sense that day i have carried my P22 with me just in case. TWO WORDS... Shot Placement!
