The world record is 42 lbs.  Go catch him.  Would be pretty cool to bring the World Recod to WA.  Good luck and tie good knots

Seen a coupla of fish that would be written in this states book as "records"........

Aint one of em from no Colombia Trib, and sure as hell aint in December.

You saw a late, bright, winter nooker.

Believing there are toad steelies the size you speak of in this state.........most definitely

Pushin 40#?............know it. Catchin one?.......fat chance. Perhaps if you sew four 10#ers together.

..............as always, offering sobering truth.

The State Record For WA. State is 38.9lbs Caught on the N.F. Lewis River!!  FYI!  I have pics of a 29lb "Winter Stealhead"  I caught on the N.F. Lewis River  I lost 2 that where well into 30lbs....dont have to belive me....IDK!  I will be posting pics later today with the next State Record....go'n fish'n you should try then you will know the Diff. between Steelhead/Salmon!  There are no Bright Salmon in the N.F.  Prove me wrong on that one......thanks guys this is interesting....Tight lines

It would be pretty awesome if you caught one.   I've seen a couple in the 30's but never anything approaching 40.  I'd have a stroke too.  Next time throw something small at him, deaddrift right above his nose. FISH ON!

Be pretty cool if the guy brought back the fish and proved all the unbelievers wrong.  SOunds like whatever he saw was a helluva fish.  Hope he catches it.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Back in my younger days when steelhead fishing the saying was 1# per inch over 20". Now I guess there in a formula to go by. I have caught a fish at 36', guess what 16#,I have caught a fish at 38", guess what 18#. I personaly saw a 42" hatchery fish caught on the Sky at Lewis St. (86) Stopped by Triangle Bev. in Snohomish on the way home, Picture that day of 42" fish, Guess what 22#. So a 48" Steellhead would not be out of the question. :dunno:
Take a kid hunting or fishing, Pass it on, it's not yours to keep!

"State record" steelhead on the Lewis was 35 and change...........record only on paper.

Original post said 4-5 footer.........huge range there. Do you realize how much weight gain steelhead get not only for every inch longer, but every half inch in diameter?

What year did the Lewis knock out that "state record"? Betcha there aint one chromosome left in gene pool from fish like that.........because if was prolly thirty years ago.

Everyone sees pictures of huge steelies from time to time............they come from places like Clearwater, ID, British Colombia, and the Washington Coast.

There is an exponentially better chance of a chrome nooker in the Lewis than a 4-5 foot steelhead.

Either way............somebody go catch that sumbitch. I wanna see a fish of this maganatude.
..............as always, offering sobering truth.

When talking about trophy Steelhead and Salmon it's the girth measurement that makes the difference. There's a big difference between a 40 inch fish with an 18 inch girth compared to the same fish that has a 20 inch girth. It's real easy to overestimate fish weights. Go catch it  :)

A 48" steelhead might not be a state record. If a 20# fish is 40" then figure at best it might have been in the low 30ish range. Not going to say you didn't see a big one. Might have been but I tend to say it was one of them winter nooks that my buddy has been catching the last few weeks.

Regardless of what you seen I hope you have fun getting after him. It must be a rush fishing knowing you have one like that lurking around. Every time the line bumps and you feel that fish tug yer heart skips and you think "is it him" Must make for a fun day.

Good luck I hope you do catch the next state record!!! And if it was a metalmouth who says it was wild? :yike:
