What would you do?
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:15:50 PM »
Just curious what people would do. Lets just say there is a rumor of several huge 200 inch monster running around some where in this country . You are hiking up there and planning on staying a long weekend. No previous scouting. lets say it about mid october or late september (for them bow hunters). The nearest road is a few miles away and there is a little trail leading to the lake.  Where would you start? Would you glass all day? which ridges would you hunt? Where would you set up camp?                       thought this might be interesting to see how people think differntly.

Hike to the highest point overlooking a few drainages, get there before first light set up with really good optics and start looking for animals, when you find what your looking for make a plan and go after em. ;) oh yeah what time of year?

I'd draw the raffle tag and shoot them on the winter range. :chuckle:

i honestly would disect this area in to sections and make sure to bring a great spotting scope with me.....

i would first camp were i would less scare animals that i could and maybe just camp with a sleeping baga nd no fire.....

then i would start off at the top of a long stretch of mountain, i then would walk about 500 yrds stop and glass and repeat every 500 yrds, then if i came up to any small crossings or fingers i would mark them on the map and walk down them and glass at about every 300-500 yards and then turn around to were i marked on the map and then continue on my long stretch.........and if you get any good wide openings then glass through thoughs also.....but i wouldnt make alot of noise....try to keep yourself unknown!

Couple things also......walk and stalk during the day only......and in the early morning and late night make sure you are awake and already walking to somewhere you want to be and glass the oppisite or near by bends and little fingers. JUST SIT FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND SEE WHAT IS MOVING BECAUSE I GUARENTEE YOU THEY WILL SEE YOU FIRST.....see mule deer love to go low at night but in the morning time they are always from where i hunt, are always side hilling up......hopefully you can find a group of deer and possably a bachelor group later on in the season moving and then be able to find out where they are nmigrating from where they eat to where they sleep......make sure you glass all your openings early in the morning.....you would be supprised to see wha animals are out sunning themselfes that early in the morning..........

BUT BEST RECOMMENDATION...........
STAY HIGH ALWAYS. IF NOT GET HIGH AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.....
STAY UNKNOWN, BE SNEEKY AROUND BENDS AND TURNS
GLASS ALOT, THINK WERE WOULD I BE IF I WAS A DEER(it is dorky but gets you thinking and keeps you interested)
KEEP HYDRATED!(before you go and while you go, if you run out of water, that means you need to turn around immediatly and go home SERIOUSLY!)
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WERE YOU ARE AT ALL TIMES....MARK YOUR MAP!!!
DONT GET LOST!(YOU MAY THINK THAT FUNNY BUT IM NOT JOKING)

AND MOST OF ALL HAVE FUN(look for sheds while your out there)
