Hunting Colorado can anybody point me in the right direction?
« on: October 02, 2010, 07:34:02 AM »
Me and a friend are kicking around a future Coloado hunt for mule deer. So I almost hate to post this but where do I start?

Is there a batch of units that offer good trophy potential. Maybe an area of the state? We want bnice deer. Not recordbook, but nice deer.

Is there a guide like eastmans that helps research Colorado?

Anybody been there? have info to share. Tips on where to start?

I've been looking at the CFG website but info is a bit limited.

Help a brutha out. I really appreciate it.

I just started applying for Colorado. Have nothing specific.
I decided to pay and use  Eastmans and Hunting Fool to help out in research and drawing odds. (Remember not all of their info is 100% correct and many other guys use their services)  Call down there and speak to a Game Biologist once you have a few areas of interest nailed down. Some are very helpful. Start doing this now IMO. Lot of info and have to sort out the useful from useless info.  Have been looking into landowner tag route too. Try and combine a family vacation down there with a scouting trip and plan on lots of driving checking out areas. This has helped me in other states

Go on Bowsite.com, Monstermuleys.com and there is some, not a lot,  info on there too.

Hunting out-of-state used to be easy. Not anymore takes a lot of research and hard work, scouting, phone calls to find good areas.

Good luck

Go to www.cohunthelp.com, they offer a scouting package at a price.  I haven't used them but have seen them all over the place when I was looking for help on Colorado.

I ended up hiring a friend for a week (a guide) and will get to know this state over the next few years as I have just moved here.

Good Luck,

I hunted around Kremling 2 years. Not an abundance on the public land, but a good area. If you're going hard core, tent camping, 4wheelers or horses, way back in, I know a spot that's produced 40 inchers! (Not kidding. Funny looking flat wide, but monsters nonetheless.)

Gut, I grew up in Rifle CO, spent the first 18 years of my life there and grew up hunting the area. PM me and I may be able to help get you started, at least get you some areas to look at. I am a bit biased since I grew up hunting around the Rifle, Meeker, Craig areas if interested, in Garfield and Moffat counties.
