Savage M99 in 250-3000 (What is it worth?)
« on: October 29, 2010, 05:03:28 PM »
I've been storing a Savage Model 99 in 250-3000 for my father-in-law and he is now thinking of selling it.  I'm wondering what the value of the rifle is.  I may just buy it from him instead of selling it for him; in either case, I'd have to figure the going rate for the rifle.

I tried to figure out a value based on a gun value book I have, but the book is about 10 years old and I really couldn't figure the exact model either.  Any ideas?

Serial number is 6535xx if that helps determine value any.

Regardless of what anyone else says after this... it's worthless.  Being the nice guy I am, I'll take it off your hands for $200.00 and save you the hassles of trying to sell it...

Ok, seriously.... Check out Gunbroker and Gunsamerica to see what they are going for.  I'd think around $500.00 rifle only.  More if that's a decent scope
Nothing witty here.... move along.

I've not tried finding ammo.  He gave me a couple boxes when he gave me the rifle to store for him last summer.  I haven't shot it, but if I do keep it I will reload for it.

The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Is there a letter after the 99 ussually there is and that will help with the price. I will look it up in my blue book when i get home i have a recent book. i would say it is probably going to be around 650.00.

That was part of the problem; I couldn't find where it said the model #.  The guys at 24hr say that it is a 99EG and that the 99EG is likely stamped under the scope mount.  That would be great if you could look up what the book says for it.

I think I'll go shoot it tomorrow if I have time and see how it groups.  Then I might take the scope mounts off and see if it says 99EG.

could always just take it to a old-fasioned gunshop and they can evaluate it... a good pawn shop would be able to put a value on it too...
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

The consensus over at 24hr is that it should be worth around $600.  They say the drill/tap for the scope mounts is not factory and that brings that value down from about $900 if it hadn't been D&T'd.  I couldn't make it out to shoot today, and elk season starts next weekend......so I won't be able to shoot it for at least a couple weeks.

That sounds about right..  I've bought and sold a couple 99's in 250-3000 and you're in the ball park.  They go for around $700-900 depending on condition and models.. i.e.  Takedown or Featherweight..  But if it's got extra holes that would reduce the value a little.  If you decide to sell it I wouldn't ask less than $650.  You'll get it.  The gun appears to be in good overall shape otherwise.  PM me if you want more info or decide you may want to sell it as I may be interested.  Good Luck!

Only if you really trust the shop..  Or you'll get lowballed of course..  as for the Pawn Shop...  You'll get a better deal on here from a fellow member than any pawn shop.   :twocents:

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure.   :)

I've had bad luck with gun shops but I'm sure there are some good ones out there.
