Actually if you are going to salt and tan a Coyote or other animal with a lengthy tail.  The tail should be split!  If it's not split salt can't get far enough into the tail to do it's job!  When you go to pickle and tan it.  You won't get a proper tan!

If you are going to use Dry Preserve you can go ahead and pull the tail bone out with out splitting the tail.

Ohhh yeah, forgot about the toes.

On yotes I split the back of the leg from the pad of the foot about 4 inches up the back of the leg.

This picture is looking down inside the foot after I have removed all the toes.  You have to remove all the toe bones.  All the way down to the toe nail.  You also have to remove all the grizle from the inside of the pad.

The foot will actually pull inside out when you go to remove the bones.

Ohh yeah here is a picture of the tail once split.  You want to split the tail on the under side.  It will hide any seam!

Do you sew the tail back up or glue it?  Thanks for the pictures.  I had one hell of a time trying to get my toes out, but I did it.  I just skinned each one out with a scalpel blade clear to the end on each one.  I have a fox and a cat to do, so curios.  I can't find the pics to the coyote I finsished.  He looked good, but a bit funny as his face just didn't look natural to me.  My brother walked in and said nice hybrid.  That was it, it had dog in it and why its face looked a bit different.

Well I am sure at some point in this yote family tree their is some domestic.  But from what I can see he looks yote to me.  If I remember correctly he is supposed to fit on one of the biggest McKenzie yote forms they sell.  When I measured him he was 4" eye to nose, 23" girth, 37" tip of nose to base of tail.

If I remember correctly their was another black yote running the same are as this one.  It might just be a genetic flaw.  The right male and female bread and walla.
