.30-06 Moose Load
« on: June 28, 2011, 06:51:27 AM »
Just wondering everyone's opinion on what you would use on a moose in .30-06.  My Weatherby in that very caliber will be coming with me to Alaska in just over 2 months, and i know what round I'll be using - but it's always good to hear feedback.  Thanks all!

Take what shoots best in your rifle but take lots. I have seen moose take several well placed shots from calibers with a lot more oomph than an 06.  :twocents:

p.s. A pissed moose can wreck a guys day in a big damn hurry.

I have killed 3 Alaskan moose using 220 grain bullets in my 06.  All were 1 shot kills at under 100 yards.  Some of the newer 180 grain bonded bullets should also work well.  Just do what ever you can to get close.

I would go with a 150 or 165 grain Barnes TSX. In any other bullet, I'd go 180 grains, but with the Barnes I think you're better off with more velocity. The bullet WILL NOT come apart. Most likely I'd go with the 150 Barnes, just for those who say a 150 grain bullet won't kill a moose.   :chuckle:

I would use a 180 Nosler Partition. My friend took a moose in Alaska using 180 Sierra bullets from his 30-06. Worked perfect.

The Barnes Triple-Shock X in 180 grain from Federal is what I'll be shooting

As you know buddy, I'm a Nosler guy.  I'd be looking at the 180gr Partition.  That said, Barnes does make a pretty good piece of lead.

That should do the trick. What part of AK are you heading to? My hunting partner is going to be using his .270 WSM for Moose this year. He has taken a raft of ish about it, but he is confident in the gun. He is going to be shooting 150 gr. TSX. He is consistently shooting 3/4 in. groups at 100. Hand loads, so he is pushing them at a pretty good speed out the barrel. I'll be shooting my 300 WSM with 180 gr. E-Tips, which I figure will do the trick. 3050 fps.
