colockum elk
« on: October 29, 2011, 08:45:41 PM »
Well it was a very slow morning very few shots. My father ended up missing one of 2 spikes in one of the two herds we saw. First herd had 63 elk in it. one 1x1 one 3x3 one 5x5 and a 2x2. there was also a small calf from this year that had 3 inch spikes still in velvet. The other herd had around 30 in it. they were over 2 ridges away. We ended up driving down the road a little ways from where he missed the spike and i looked over to the next ridge where a dead elk was lying. there was a guy just sitting in his truck and he got out and told us that another guy got out of his truck and shot it. then He walked up to the elk looked at it and walked away. I couldn't be leave it. So I told my father that I was going to walk over there and check it out. (It was a lot farther than it looked). Well I ended up about 500 yards to the right side of it and couldn't see it anywhere from where I was. So I got a hold of my dad and he said another hunter stumbled upon the elk. I started the walk back to the truck. It ended up being a true spike and another hunter tagged it. It was a weird deal. Not sure why the guy that shot it didn't tag it.  :bash:  Only saw 4 elk hanging in camps. The other weird thing was we were road hunters (my father cant hike Bad heart) and almost every camp at daylight still had hunter in them. A lot of guys sitting by the fire holding rifles. And a lot of guys sitting in there trucks watching clearings. Not to many guys out hiking like normal.  :dunno:

we were on Little carabou with tents, cold. we were by the fire alot holding rifles( to heat them up - LOL!)

One of the guys in our camp got his first elk opening morning.
The ridge sounded like a battlefield, cant believe it was only 3 elk taken up there for the amount of shots i herd.

I left my spot to help with the elk and skinning only to see the rest of the herd run 10 feet away from the spot i was planted in freezing my butt off.

My planned ambush failed, but would have been good if i would have stayed where i was. oh well.
No mor colockum hunting for me, wont hunt elk anymore unless my uncles go hunting - in a diferent area.
