I thought about starting to build points last year in either Wyoming or Montana or both but then couldn't commit since I wasn't sure exactly how long it would take to have a reasonable chance to draw.  Waited till the last minute and still couldn't decide on buying points so I did nothing.  I'll probably look at it again this year  and end up doing the same thing  :chuckle:

I gave up several years ago when they raised the price of bonus points: $75 for moose.  If it takes ten years to draw a quality tag, you're already in for $750.

That's just crazy, IMO.

I don apply for sheep or moose in Wyoming. I felt like I was too far behind in the point game to justify the cost. Didn't apply for goat this year as I couldn't justify the tag cost for the long odds with no points involved.

Exactly my thoughts.

I have 6 pts for moose and 5 pts for sheep. Ill start thinking I'm in the running with around 11 for moose and about 12-14 for sheep. WY pt system actually works. With fairly liberal tag allotments, the avg pt to draw very slowly rises. Unlike trying to draw in our state or a utah premium limited entry or a kaibab or strip AZ tag. If you're behind "par" so to speak, your time will come.

11 for moose as of 2011.
Had 7 for Sheep, bought one point when they went to $100, assessed my odds again and bowed out four years ago.
None for goat.

Actually the goat tags have pretty good odds for how few there are.  Good... meaning less than 1 and 100 :chuckle:

I have 9 points for moose.  I am almost in the game.   Probably will buy another point this year versus applying.   The units I want to hunt had a grand total of 2 random tags last year.

11 point hardcorp.   Thats awesome.   You are on the fence for a guaranteed draw in many units.

Odds are decent but it is a big cash investment that I'm not prepare to make. If you want good goat odds CO is the place to apply.

As of last year I have 11 for moose and sheep so 12 this year.  I have 4 point last year for deer, elk, antelope.  Think about putting in for moose.

Moose only.
11 points in hand.  On the verdge of drawing myself for my area of choice but would probably fall into the random draw for that 1 tag.
Realistically, I think I'm still 2-3 years out from a successful draw on points.
I will probably just buy the point, undecided yet.

I had the idea of building points in my mind from listening to a few of you a year or two ago. This year I seriously looked into it and I'm flabbergasted by the math. Correct me if I'm wrong but basically you're going to spend about $1,000 over ten years building your points per species then about $1,000 once you get drawn... already in for it $2,000 for one animal and then there's the cost of your scouting trip(s) and your hunt  :yike:

No wonder people go hunt Africa  :bash: 7 species for $5,000 sounds cheap now!

a lot of my points were bought when they were 7 dollars a year not the 75 and 100 like now.

Look at the alternative.  You can put in for points in WY, CO, UT, NV, MT, WA, NM, etc. and invest maybe 7500 over the next 10 years so that 10 years from now you start drawing a once-in-a-lifetime hunt once every other year or so.  Or you could save your money and spend 7500 bucks to go on a guided moose hunt in BC or $12k to go in AK.  Seems like points are a better investment to me.

Africa doesn't have a huge draw to me mostly because I love the North American big game animals that I see and photograph on a regular basis.

Dropped out two years ago with 10 pts for each. If you look at the better sheep units I would have had to beat random odds or wait about 20 more years. Average sheep in most units as well. For moose the units I was looking into have been decimated by wolves. Luckily I only paid the higher fee one year and then dropped. I guess maybe all those points helped me draw a sheep tag for Washington last year. Don't know how else I beat the odds here. Good luck to those putting in. You will get a moose tag but sheep is slim odds unless you are sitting within a point or two of the top right now but someone has to be drawn in the random.

I think I just discovered my next business venture. I will move to Africa amd set up a game preserve. Featured will be bighorn sheep, moose, elk, amd mule deer. Come shoot one of each for $5,000.

I have 11 points going into the 2012 WY moose draw.  Looks like I have plenty of competition for the few NR tags.
With the tags being cut every year due to wolf predation, I may never draw one before they eliminate the moose tags all together.

My worries as well.   If it hadn't been for the wolves, we would have already been drawn.

It was a tough commitment to stay.   The alternative was no moose for me, so I kept in it.   I was hoping a whole bunch of folks above me in tier with points would give up and drop.   There was some attrition.
