spotlighting a cougar
« on: August 24, 2008, 07:51:36 PM »
Has anyone seen the reflection of a cougars eyes at night? Last night my son and I were out bear hunting and on our way back to town after dark we had an animal in the headlights coming towards us along the edge of the logging road we were on then slowly turned and off the road it went, it was shorter than a deer but near the same color. I realize this is a lot if information, but the interesting thing was the animal moved slow and steady no jerky movement like a deer and its eyes reflected green. I have seen a lot of deer and elk in the headlights and they have always been red. What do you think would have green eye's?

From my experience, the color of *most* animal's eyes will vary with the reflection of bright light...by that I mean, it depends on the angle you look at them, as well as the angle the light is shining on 'em.

I've not seen cougars eyes at night, but I have seen ferals cats and bobcats both show reddish orange, yellow, or green at night.

Years ago I was told that green will gather light the best...which is why green fiber optic sight pins on your bow glow better than the others, why night vision is green, and why a cat's eyes are green.

Wow, I'm rambling.
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

Had the same experience at my home. Hit it with a spot light and it moved slow and steady too, like a cat, but couldn't tell if it was for sure a cougar. It was about 100 yds away and had yellow eyes.

Could it have been a coyote?
