2012 gut piles!

I'm starting this to try and combine some efforts so maybe it doesn't belong here but... I say if you are successful and leave a gut pile in don't intend to be near it anymore, let's share the wealth. Where is the gut pile? How old is it? Maybe we can unite predator hunters and deer/elk hunters in a symbiotic relationship

I leave mine on the blacktop so you should have no trouble finding them.  sometimes I even do a gutpile burnout if I'm in a messy mood.

I'll start. My bull gut pile and boned out carcass is at panhandle lake, on the east end of the panhandle.

I do realize this seems like giving up your honey hole, by all means keep them to yourself if you want. That was not the intent. Gutpiles aren't bait.

edit: Ok, by the not bait part I meant this isn't for going after bears.

Mine was left on the hill....in both places. Pretty sure the last one is gone by now and I know the first one is gone...I went and checked already.

I would imagine that they could make a case if sat over a gutpile you knew was there and shot an animal that was illegal to bait. In other words if you shot an animal in a cut to find out it was feeding on a gut pile you had no knowledge of, they would be hard pressed to prosecute.

Remember there is a lot of gray matter in the books that gives the leo discretion. So think hard before anyone takes this thread out of context and does something that gets them in trouble.

nope..talked to a gamie about this... I had a question reguarding sitting over a moose carcass since they are so big...said it was perfectly fine even a road kill as long as u dont move it

I've talked to several gamies. Everyone of them said gutpiles were baiting as long as you don't transport them with the intent of using them for bait. So don't move them and your fine.

As previously stated it is not considered baiting if you dont move them. It is all about the intent of why the "Bait" was left. You just gutted a deer, you didnt leave the gut pile specifically for use as bait. Its just like hunting bear near garbage dumps or orchards. The garbage would be there anyway and the intent of the orchard is not to feed bears. Hope this helps.

I asked that same question: I knew where three gutpiles were and intended on hunting bear the next day.
Officer said; If you know where the pile is, and you go in with the intent on hunting over it, it is Baiting.
If you are hunting and come across a gutpile and decide to "sit on it"  It is considered baiting. 
I think the element of something foriegn to the area that attract bears has to be factored in?. 
 I had to pass on two bears this year because I saw gutpiles first.. 
I still look for a bunch of crows but avoid looking for the reason. Better to hunt safely and legally.

Read the wording of the actual law, not just how they have it in the pamphlet. A gut pile does not meet the definition of bait. There is no way I would pass up a bear just because there happened to be a gut pile in the area.

Not worried about the wording, I can find loopholes if I want to.  I'm trying to obey the intent of the law. If I know a gutpile is there, its probably going to be considered baiting by a judge.  If I knew where they dump buckets of rotten apples yesterday, I'm probably not going back to hunt over it.   I don't agree with all the rules but, I'm not going to push my luck and hope an officer sees it my way...  I'm a "avoid all doubt" kinda guy anyway.  Just giving an opinion and not trying to get into an arguement. Thanks.

ITS NOT AGAINST THE LAW! who is anyone to say u were hunting over a gutpile? they are all over the woods! not to include all the deer baits..whos to say at any given time when bear hunting a bear was traveling to a carcass or a bait pile u didnt know about.

Yeah I was going to say he better not hunt bears during deer season.... there are gut piles all over then.

I see it as, if you place the gut pile there, from a kill, elsewhere, that would be the same as putting Crispy Creams out.  On the other hand, if you, or another lucky hunter, left the guts where the animal expired, you didn't put the pile there and are not expected to remove it from the woods.  If it is there, it is like berry patches and nut trees - fair game.  Just shoot straignt.

I love how some game wardens don't even know the law and simply make up rules. I once had a GW tell me that I couldn't feed elk and deer corn (about 8 years back). I called him on it and he changed his story to "Well, F&G does not recommend that you do it. It's bad for the animals." Lol.

You can sit a gut pile unless you placed it there for the sole purpose of baiting (ie. conveniently relocated). If you found the pile or it's your animal that you killed, there is nothing they can do to you. If you disagree lets see it in writing.
