2 Roosevelt bulls in 1 year!
« on: October 05, 2012, 01:48:51 PM »
I had the privilege of hunting both Oregon and washington this year for Roosevelt's! Every September tells a story! Good or bad you know you will learn something and have great memories for a lifetime! I love to Elk hunt because of the challenge it brings! No better way to test yourself than to Hunt Roosevelt's! The Washington season was amazing for my dad and I. We hunted a new spot! The first 9 bulls we called in within 100 yards all happened to wind us. whats the odds eh? After almost connecting on a 300 class 6x and other rag horns,we decided to change up our gameplan on the 4Th day! My dad shot at 2 bulls in the thick stuff but wasn't able to connect 2 days later. now he said i could get a crack at one! September 11th rolled around and we decided to try our luck on a new spot!It was my dads last night before heading back home! it turned out to be a good decision! A 30 min hike lead us to a beautiful meadow about the size of a football field! I peeked over the edge to see 5 cows and a 4 point bull feeding throughout the meadow, My dad dropped back and did some light herd talk to try to bring the my way. having the bull about a 120 yards away feeding and walking toward me i knew i might be able to get a shot! i remember one cow was bedded down and had me pinned, i had to sneak to try to get a shot without her getting up and alerting the herd! The bull would let out a few moans when my dad would chirp behind me! finally he walked about 100 yards in front of me! i slowly moved toward him preparing myself for a shot! The wind was perfect blowing directly into my face! I snuck up to 72 yards. My rangefinder was in my left hand. I tried to range him but was shaking like a leaf on a tree. I moved the rangefinder to my right hand and steadied it! 72 yards it read! he was quartering away. I took 5 more steps and drew back! When i let go i thought i hit him but wasn't forsure? He ran over about 60 yards and looked back as i cow called lightly. As i stood there looking at him for 30 seconds he started to get wobbling and bam he was down! The moment of thinking you missed a bull and your opportunity to having him run 60 yards and dropping dead!!! Quite a amazing feeling! I ran back to my dad and yelled he is down! the same words my Dad heard 2 years ago with my Toutle bull! What a great father and son moment! something i will always remember! As we gutted him and quartered him out i realized i made a perfect heart shot with those shuttle T locks broadheads! It did its job! Now it was time to hunt the Oregon Coast! I headed to Oregon 6 days later after filming a Blacktail hunt in Northern California! As we setup camp the night of the 18th we realized the area we hunted was now closed to fire danger! GREAT!! I had a special bull in mind but man i guess he had to wait till next year! My buddy and I decided to hunt a blocked gate that was closed to vehicles but not public entry! We headed up about a half mile when we hit a beautiful grassy road! I let 2 location bugles out and Bam a bull was 300 yards away and closing the distance as he was bugling. I did a bunch of herd talk and estrus call while taking off my pack and getting my bow. I shut up and decided to cut the distance. as i approached the deep timber i could see him working his way down! I don't have a rangefinder by the way. My backpack was stolen in WA right after i shot my bull there! so I'm guessing my yardage! my first arrow missed but my 2ND arrow connected. The bull walked off about a 100 yards before bedding down. I could hear all of his cows crash. i decided to let him have a hour! As a hour passed i walked up where he was, I jumped him out of his bed and he took off, i cow called lightly for 15 seconds! He ran down the hill back to me 35 yards broadside. i put 2 arrows right in the lungs! I watched him fall 60 yards away! I knew my goal of shooting 2 public land OTC Roosevelt's was just completed! What a amazing experience! Looking Back on my last 3 years of Elk hunting, shooting 4 public land Roosevelt's i know it is something I live for all year! It burns like a fire in me out of control! Its the challenge and the learning process every season brings! Hunting with my great friends and Dad, we shared great memories together and meat for the Winter! Being young and ready to explore, My Goal for next year is to add Montana to my September agenda! 3 Public land bulls in 1 year! I will be working hard in the off season to try to achieve this goal!!!

Congrats!! That is quite an achievement!
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.
