Hmmm.  County road.  You don't own the wildlife.  Better get used to it or move.  Completely legal. :twocents:

That is a bunch of BS right there. My place is on a county road....it's paved and is surrounded by private property. What is legal about that?

I guess there are two types of road hunters though. One that drives mountain non maintained roads surrounded by state land and such (more power to them).........and ones that don't care where they are, shoot deer on private property and have no problems about tresspassing. I don't care if they have a tag or not, it is not legal and.......it really pisses me off. I have had my place for 20+ years tell me why I should have to drive into my own place to find a gut pile from a deer shot from a county road. Sorry  to vent but that's my  :twocents:

I'm all good with the lookers......it is the shooters I have a beef with.

I live near Vail and every year we have people stop in our driveway to look at the elk or deer in mine or my neighbor's pastures.  Many times I catch them "looking" at the critters through a rife scope.  I chased off a couple of guys who were glassing some deer in my pasture (1,000 feet off of the road) with their rifles laying across the hood of their truck.  Keep in mind that these deer were in my pasture with my cows and horses with my barn directly behind them.  When I spotted them scoping out those deer, I was coming out of my barn in direct line of fire.  I was pissed, grabbed my old .250 Savage and tore after them on my quad.  They quickly got the hint.

The problem is people out driving in all private areas during a open season, a few bad apples have ruined this for people that are completely innocent, but its more than a few bad apples. When u see the same damn rigs doing loops around the area all day long its not hard to figure out what they are doing! they are waiting to see a buck in that right spot where they can shoot. I watched this chit every year where I lived.

You said it right there......it was friken ridiculous.  Back and forth, 5 miles per hour over and over again.

I'm not sure when a road hunter became a derogortory term. I've done it. Its's not my fave tactic, but it can be fun and productive.  I WILL NEVER LOOK DOWN upon a road hunter.  I may chuckle a bit, but I surley dont think he is scum. Far from it.

I live and work on one of the biggest farms in Jefferson county.. Folks are always stopping to check things out. Cows, bulls, ducks. eagles, coyotes, bear, even deer! A lot are hunters. Some are birders, and some just love nature. Hardly any problems.     Seems like a lot of the land owners here complaining forget that they are not the only ones who enjoy nature. That deer you see every day does not belong to you.  INNOCENT BEFORE PROVEN GUILTY

I don't mind when they pull over or slow down just to look, but when they get out of their rig with guns in hand, yeah, I have a big problem with that.

Yes here in the PNW everybody has adopted a behavior of entitlement!
Seems instead of doing your own homework and putting in the hard work or scouting and planning need not apply. It's a liberal belief that's what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine own.
Guessing you voted for Obama...
This is one of the most absurd things I have ever read.  This isn't a stupid political issue.  It is not a "liberal belief" that wildlife and county roads are public resources...it is an American belief...and you are backwards on entitlements...why should a landowner get to see deer and use county roads that exist because of my TAX and License dollars??  If thats your argument I could make the case that all private landowners are nothing but welfare recipients getting public resources for virtually free...but I'm not because such an argument is as dumb as what you suggest in your post above.  For a THIRD time, if someone illegally kills a deer (from the road, on private land etc.) then hang em high!  Some on here seem to be angry landowners who have problems with poachers...I would be mad as hell if someone poached a deer on my land so I am clearly not suggesting that illegally killing a deer is ok.   With respect to your comments that I must not scout or work hard when it comes to hunting you are severely misguided.  I hunt and SCOUT in multiple western states every year.  I have hunted several weeks this year.  I have been on 4 successful bull elk hunts and 7 successful deer hunts this year.  One bull and one buck were mine, the rest I helped friends and family find, kill, and pack out.  I assure you I work and scout and plan as hard as just about anyone can who still has to work for a living.  I love hunting and I love seeing wildlife wherever I am at and if I'm on a public road and see wildlife I will probably stop and look at it.  If you are a private landowner and don't like that...tell somebody who cares.

I did not read all of the thread but from what I have seen road hunters are lazy people who just drive from one spot to another to look for animals.

Correct?

When I lived back home my dad had a way of dealing with hunters shooting deer on our Farm. We'd be sitting in the house and be able to see the hunters stop their rigs, shoot the deer and start out across the field over the fence with signs posted every 100 feet. he'd let them get almost to the deer then open the Door and commence target practice shooting the cow pies in front of them with an occasional one behind them too. Never got in trouble with police because the property was posted with No Trespassing signs.

ROAD HUNTERS!!!
« Reply #117 on: November 21, 2012, 09:56:02 AM »

Ummmmmm.   Just you then???

Not sure what you even mean by that., but I guess you caught me.

If you mean look at deer in someones big field without the intent to kill then yes.

If you mean road hunt on public land and kill big deer yearly, then yes.

I do my fair share of walking, but I always get a kick out of guys walking 5-10 miles a day and must of them never seeing a deer. If you know the deer is there then cool, go after it. If you are out of your area with no scouting, you would have to be out of your mind to start charging over hills blind.

You can call it what you want, but no one can tell me road hunting isnt the best during the rut. Ive killed too many big deer to be told otherwise. Just some advice from an old timer.

Ya know I have more respect for the guys that hike those 5-10 miles a day and spend 2-3 yrs between getting an animal. And even when they arrow or shoot  a Doe or a Cow 3 miles down in some hell hole and it takes ya 8hours to drag it out to the nearest road, only to have another 2 miles back to the truck.  And on that walk you run into the Game Warden who asked you where ya got your critter? And you can look him in the eyes and tell him your story, and he doesn't even question it, because he can see the tired truth of a real hunter.
As apposed to others that blast something from a logging road and quickly load it in there truck or stuff it in the back seat or wait till the cover of darkness.  And every once in a to few while, one of you gets pinched.  Then ya come on  these forums and BITCH about that Mean oll' Gamie who just had it out for you' or it's a "technicality"

why do road hunters bother you guys so much?  doesnt that make the "deep woods" you hunt that much more private?  :dunno:

i've road hunted, i've hiked my butt off, i've ridden 4 wheelers all over stubble, i've hunted public and private... and been successful at all of them!  you should quit worrying about the other guy and concentrate on your hunt.

as to trespassers and poachers?  well, i dont think ANYONE likes them!  i'm not advocating shooting an animal in a field you don't have permission to be in, but to get upset about people driving down the county road and stopping to look at animals?  really?   :bash:  maybe they've got a 90 year old man in the rig on his last "hunt" and they want to show him some animals.  if there's no guns sticking out the window, give it a rest!
