mountain rifle

I am thinking I need a new rifle for a back pack hunt I am planning. I have looked at the kimber 84, ruger ultralite, rem. 7, and 700, and the howa. there are things about each I like. kimber is SWEET! but spendy. rem. has had some quality issues of late, ruger is nice but question thier accuracy, I am really thinking of the howa, I had one before and it was very accurate. but it was a full wight rifle and I am now looking at the compact. I am laso considering new calibers. the 7mm-08 is intriguing as is the 300wsm. I honestly think if I go with either the ruger or the kimber i'd get a .257 roberts. any imput?

The Kimber in .260 Rem would make a sweet rifle for a backpack hunt IMO.

Another rifle worth looking at (if you want to save some money) might be the Savage in 7mm-08.  http://www.savagearms.com/16fhss.htm  With a 22" barrel and only 6.5 pounds, I think the Savage would make a good mountain rifle too.

I have a remington 700 mountain rifle in 30=-06, great gun, nice and light too.

If you have the coin, Kimber Montana is light done right! Second choice would be a Remington Titanium (original version, not the Alaskan model).

If not, the Remington Mtn. LSS is a nice platform. Just replace the heavy and unbalanced laminate stock.

You might be able to find a Mountain Guide Rifle (blued) at Cabela's or the SS Mtn. Guide at Gander Mountain. Both rifles sport a mountain barrel contour like the Mtn. LSS but instead of the laminate stock a Bell and Carlson stock which Remington utilized on their original Titanium rifles. Either version is available in short action only.

i just purchased a model 700 270 wsm cdl stainless fluted rifle. The mountain rifle remington makes is a bit lighter but i did not want any of those calibers. This gun is money.

I have the ti rem mtn gun in 270win, and the 257wby in a mark v ultralight/super big game master. the 700 is lighter and faster handling, more accurate and cheaper......just that the 257 is good enough and oooooooohhhhhh so flat shooting.

I don't own a montana, but I hear there are great ones and nightmares........just what I have heard there, no personal expierence. the good news is they are quite easy to sell if you get a dud.

Myself, I'd buy a Ruger or a Savage. I'm not even thinking about weight. Both are good dependable AMERICAN made rifles with no frills.

I have the Kimber Montana in 270 WSM and 300 WSM.  The 270 WSM has a 6-18 Swarovski and is the best production mountain (deer) rifle that $$$ can buy IMO.  It is extremely light, handles great, very accurate, flat ,and fast.  Also,  the recoil is very managable.  The 300 WSM has a little bite, but is still a great rifle.  I don't think you can go wrong with either.  I used to be a die hard Remington guy, but that has changed as of late.   Hope this helps, JJ

Same vote of "Yes" for the Kimber 84 Montana, I have one, it is a great super light weapon.  I have it in .308.  It is actually lighter than the .270, by a mere amount because the barrel hole is larger and the outside is the same diameter, don't know about the 300 WSM, my next one...!  Weighed it on a digital scale at a speciality shop in AK and compared all the other manufactures, the Rem Titanium, Ruger, Weatherby Super light weight, etc... The Kimber is far under the other weights.......  Bought a couple years ago, again you'll be happy as heck with it...  I also got the Leupold light weight compact scope in 3 x 9 attached.  Another thing is a nylon strap like sling, weighing darn near nothing to complete the gun.  The gun doesn't have a magizine well or a flap that "Could" come loose, some don't like the internal design, but I love it as it is worry free from a possible dropping of rounds while carring in pack..

Depends on the action. Specifications Remington published was 5 1/4 for short actions and 5 1/2 for long actions. Of course, they vary +/- a few ounces.
