Starting issues 94 Corsica
« on: December 12, 2012, 09:25:22 AM »
Here lately when the weather turned colder my car has had a bit of trouble starting in the morning or if it has been awhile since running.  I figured it was the battery so had it checked at Les Schwab while getting a flat fixed.  The battery says 11/07 on it.  To my suprise they said the battery and the whole charging system are good.  Not sure if they test it under load but it was running on the way so probably warmed it up.  I am thinking maybe it is not holding a charge through the cold.  I also noticed about the same time that I have an oil drip.  It is dripping off the starter but I do not know where it is coming from.  Yesterday after my kids teacher conference at school I turn they key and all the lights come on but nothing from the starter.  After a couple key turns it started up like normal.  I am hoping to be getting a new rig in the next couple months so do not want to put a bunch of $ into it.  Do you all think battery or would the oil have something to do with it?  Thanks for any help.

If it spins over like normal once it actually turns over then it is not the battery.  More than likely a dead spot in the starter motor windings or a short in the solenoid.
If you hear a noticeable click or clunk when you hit the key and it doesn't spin over then probably dead spot in the motor windings.  If no click (solenoid) then bad solenoid.
COuld easily be a poor ground as well.  Without crawling all over the car, install a new ground wire, 8-10ga min from somewhere on the engine to the body.  Also shorted + wire to starter or wires to solenoid could have the same intermittent issue.

Could be the tumbler/ignition switch on the column?
