Twenty-six years ago I harvested my first elk. Yesterday, I was able to relive some of that excitement with my first muzzy kill. The hunt (Margaret) was very active. I left the house at 3:30AM Thurs and arrived at my destination at first light. Over the next six hours I tried putting the sneak on 6 different elk herds but could not get a clean shot. The elk were very spooky, most likely from being chased by hunters for the last 3 months. At this point the snow picked up so I decided to look at a different part of the unit but did not see another elk.
The next morning I went back up to the area where the elk had me running in circles. After two failed stalks, I finally had all the right conditions and hit this elk with a high shoulder shot from about 75 yards. I recovered my bullet against the hide on the opposite side of entry. While it retained most of its mass, I expected more mushrooming.
