$1,000.00 or 1,000 yards?  Hunting or target?

What are you looking for in the rifle itself? Barrel length, weight etc. Lot's of great rifles out there. I purchased a brand new Wetherby Mark V Synthetic in .308 last year for $750. It is an awesome rifle.

I went through the same search last year. The advice above is right-on. I settled on a Tikka synthetic stainless in .308. I'm very happy with it.

I would recommend a Browning A Bolt. You can get one for $550:

Unless you're into only buying American made products, then look at Savage, Marlin, Remington, and Ruger. They all make good rifles. Although there is at least one rifle that Remington makes, and one that Savage makes, that you want to avoid.
I've heard the Marlin XS7 is a good rifle for the money. And, if you spend less on a rifle, you can spend more on a scope.

 :yeah:

Does the $1000 include your scope budget? If yes, I'd recommend finding a rifle in $500-600 range and then spend around $400 on a scope.

Even if the $1000 is for just the rifle, I'd probably still buy a $500 rifle. Heck, I'd buy a $300 and then spend the extra money to build a better rifle and still come in under $1000.

You can pick up the Savage 111 combo with the Nikon BDC reticle scope for under $500.     That's a plenty good package, and leaves you $500 for ammo to practice with.

Good luck making your choice.

For the money the new Ruger American looks hard to beat.  Everyone I know that purchased one this past year has experienced subMOA grouping.  That leaves you a bunch of Benjamins for scope and ammo!  If it weren't so damn ugly I might have to get one for myself.

I recommend spending $300-400 on a used rifle and spending $600-700 on a quality scope  :twocents:
