blued vs stainless
« on: February 02, 2013, 08:38:39 AM »
Just wondering what everybodies opinion or experience with deer being spooked with stainless? I have one blued muzzy and have a chance to buy one with a stainless barrel for my other daughter to try and get her first deer and wondering if that might hurt her chances? Thanks

My father-in-law is convinced that stainless will scare off game. He just wraps some camo tape around the barrel to reduce the glare.

Some stainless barrels have a shine them, I could see an animal catching the glare and getting spooked. Some blued barrels are glossy as well though. Not something I would worry about too much on deer but for calling coyotes I'd probably cover up.

Both stainless and blued have a sheen to them in the light.  My bead blasted stainless barrel actually gives off less sheen than the blued barrel.  I usually wrap my barrels in camo form tape if I am worried about reflected light spooking game.

I would not make my decision based on visibility.

deer will probably see your uv rays coming off your cloths WAY before they see the glare from your gun. :twocents:

:) "polished" or not is the question, there are shiny stainless and blued and dull both also,  some wood finishes glare like crazy. I do not agree that just because it is stainless it shows up more.

What does your daughter like? Should get her something she is excited about shooting!

I have a brushed stainless steel barrel with a jacaranda stock and I can't wait to use it this year!

I have killed plenty of both deer and bear with stainless. I have both blued and stainless, but my main go to rifle is stainless and has been a very successful hunting tool for me. It is just my preference and has worked well. I know that there are much more knowledgeable people on here about this, but it is pretty hard to argue against success.

I prefer stainless for the wetside.  You can get different stainless finishes.  There is a shiny and a nonreflective matte.  Also you can have it dipped in teflon and it becomes matte black.  Or tape/sleeve/paint it.  I don't think that the reflection bothers them.

It's great for tracking other hunters.  I watched my cousin walk across a ridge from over a mile away by being to see his stainless (brushed) rifle.  If you take care of your gun like you should, stainless is not necessary and just an added expense.

Thanks everyone for the replies. She really likes the stainless look and has always had blued rifles. This will be their first year hunting with a Muzzy

:yeah:

I only have a little stainless steal revolver used to conceal. I kind of like it cause I'm not so worried about rust. I can neglect it just a little more often I guess.  ;) But my hunting rifles and other rifles are a different story all together.
