Lewis River unit
« on: February 13, 2013, 09:10:55 PM »
Anybody familiar with the Lewis River unit. I think I drove through it once and recall it being pretty steep. Im loooking mostly on the west half of the unit near the east side of St Helens. Hows the terrain, and of course are there many elk in there during early archery. From what I can tell I would guess it to be similar the Siouxon unit.

So the East side of St. Helens is pretty tough hunting. Steep, thick and no vehicle access. If you are willing to hike it in and stay a couple days at a time in there you should do pretty well. I do not think anyone goes in there but die hard hunters who are not afraid to pack out their elk. I believe there are a couple old fire roads that are gated but go all the way down into the canyon so the walking should be easy in and out. Most people just don't want to make the hike and stay there. If my dad could make it I would go there.

gmu 560 is HUGE and of varied terrain. Find areas of stable food sources and you will find elk and deer. Its not all up/down by a long shot.
