Shooting with glasses?
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:46:33 PM »
For those of you who wear glasses....do you shoot with or without them? Do you have to modify anything to adjust for the glasses?

I recently started wearing glasses and havent had a chance to shoot but have drawn my bow a couple of time and it doesn't seem like I will be able to do it accurately. It looks like I am looking between the bridge and the lenses. Is this something I can work around or am I doomed to be a rifle hunter again?

I shoot with glasses. No issues here. I can't tell you what it was like before glasses because I've been wearing them basically forever.

I've worn glasses since the 6th grade. Been shooting all my life: shotguns, bows, rifles with scopes.

NO ISSUES

You may need to adjust the tilt of your head to insure your line of sight goes thru the lense of your glasses. Or get a second pair of glasses just for shooting/hunting.

I have somewhat of an issue when shooting my bow with my glasses. I've found that if I push them all the way up everything is fine, but they don't normally sit that high. So what I end up doing is having to adjust the angle of my head slightly from what would be natural. So I could see how it might affect your accuracy. I think what is really needed is glasses with big lenses, and less of a gap between your nose and the lenses.

I've thought about getting a pair of glasses from here:  http://sportglasses.com/content/Archery.htm

My biggest issue, and one I've been too lazy to fix so far, is that all of my glasses are 'progressives' with far-sighted correction 'transitioning' into near-sighted correction. Think bifocals without the lines.

Yes, you will be looking thru the edge of the glass close to the bridge. With glasses like mine tho, there is no correction out there. I need to get a pair with only far-sight correction. Then at least the edge of the lense has some correction. Otherwise it's just better to go without.

Anchor point can be tweeked too. If I do the 'string to the tip of my nose' then I'm looking thru the very edge of the lense. String to the side of the nose would improve this some.

Same here, No issue for me with the same glasses I have in my avatar photo. They're transitions even, Kind of a pain in the butt. Dont get them lol... Could be your frames though.

I sometimes wear glasses and sometimes contacts. I always wear contacts when I shoot because the glasses change my point of impact. I can shoot with them but it changes my anchor. You can shoot with glasses just fine, just make sure you always shoot with them.

Anchor Sight.  What you see without the bow is the same sight picture you get with the bow.  You can look through the part of the glasses you normally look at, don't have to cant your head or look through the edge of the glasses and line up a peep.

I wear glasses all the time.  I can't shoot with my prescription Oakley sunglasses because it has a thick, long bridge and obscures my sight picture.  No problem with my everyday wear Oakley Jackknife glasses ( http://www.oakley.com/products/2142/5807 )

I wish I could get contacts to work.  I hate wearing glasses.  I've tired about 8 times over the years.  I require Toric lenses for my stigmatism and I can't get any of them to aline properly on my eyes.   :(

Thanks for the input guys. Mtbiker....those are the glasses I am wearing and still haven't quite gotten use to them. Like I said I haven't actuelly shot the bow only drawn it. Hopefully things will fall into place once I get more use to wearing the glasses.

i wear glasses, since the 8th grade. to shoot anything bow rifle or shotgun i have to push my glasses all the way up i wear a wire frame with medium size lenses. it will take some getting used to but once you do i dont think you should have a problem. i dont notice a POI change between my glasses and contacts although i have a pretty bad astigmatism so im pretty much blind at all distances without corrective lenses although i wear my contacts when hunting just cause i hate having my glasses fog up or get dirty from sweat and dirt and cant see when i need to.

now shooting with sunglasses darn near impossible

Been wearing glasses since I was 5 yrs old, and I do not have any issues while shooting my bow. However when hunting I wear contacts just to eliminate the possibility of light reflecting off the lens and scaring away the prey. Plus no chances of fogging up. But I do practice while wearing glasses just in case I loose a contact lens (which has happened).

I have one of the sports wraps that keeps them securely in the same place all day long. They cost 2.99 or something and just slip over the stems.

I took my shotgun to my optomotrist so he could understand my head position when shooting. Archery is very similar. He then spread my prescription out wider and up higher. Easily done. I shoot my bow with them on also.

Good idea but if I walked into Group Health with a shotgun, I'm not sure how far I would get.   :yike:
