gobblers
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:59:42 AM »
So I ment to post this a while ago just never got around to it. Ive turkey hunted the last several years and am still learning alot. I know they gobble april and may. give or take a few weeks each way. However the birds that life on my property seem to start gobbling really early, I heard the first gobble of the year on febuary 19th.... seems odd?

The gobblers around Goldendale were gobbling in January, and I heard one in the Ellensburg area on Feb 2nd.

I was over at my new place in Stevens county over the weekend and the birds were gobbling, but it really doesnt mean much yet.  They are still heavily bunched in their winter groups and don't really answer calls.  I saw a couple of bunches of around 75-100 birds and the toms and jakes were strutting around and gobbling back and forth, but they start doing that this time of year.  They are still mixed in with the hens and really not showing a lot of interest in anything other than filling their stomachs. Still quite a bit of snow in the lower hills and chilly at night, seems like it takes a few more warm days before they start to get serious.

They've been establishing the pecking order, and as it warms up even more they will start breaking into smaller groups and breeding.  Many of the hens will be breed, start laying their eggs and leaving the tom for their nests by start of the season.

In my experience they gobble year round, we hear them during rifle elk season every year.

Just at dark on March 2 they were gobbling heavy on both the east and west side of Eloika LK. This is common for this time of year. It just increases as time goes on. There is still a lot of snow in the woods from Deer Park north.
