Umtanum deer
« on: October 16, 2013, 06:34:30 AM »
I know the deer numbers are down, but wondering what people have been seeing so far this season?  Anyone take a buck in that unit yet?

Was out for muzzy elk. Saw lots of does and a couple cool looking calico colored does but very few bucks and even fewer legal shooters.

Glad to hear the piebalds are still around.  I haven't seen them for awhile.   Providing of course they weren't hair slipped deer.  I am seeing more of them too which probably isn't helping the population any

This unit has went to hell..  I know where to go after big deer in this unit but I cannot bring myself to go back there..
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

Im happy to just have memories of the Umtanum and 328, 329, 336, 340, among most of the other mule deer units.  I used to love hunting the Umtanum over 20 years ago..........no crowds by comparison.

you have to work hard in that unit to find bucks, lots of glassing and walking. We saw 6 bucks in 3 days, only 3 were shooters. I tagged one on Monday. Rumor has it the gammies caught someone who tagged a biiig forked 2 point up there on Sunday, not good

They're in there you just got to work for them.  I've seen a lot of forkies poached and left to rot in thelast few years and also aa lot of forkies harvested and taking home so the affects of the last couple years is catching up.  I seen quite a few camps on the wenas side with bucks hanging but not to many on the nile side. I did almost run a big 3x3 over last weekend hauling a..  not sure what he was running from....... :dunno:

This was the first time in 10 years of living on the Ump,that I was home for opening weekend. If the number of shots that I heard is any indication of legal buck numbers, well hunting was pretty poor.
Their seems to be many factors, involved with low buck numbers, in this unit. Hair loss, cats, poaching, tribal hunting, are all factors. The latest theory I have heard is a virus, but the virus theory is unproven, last I heard. It's tough living here and seeing the low number's, knowing that I should hunt elsewhere for better odds at punching a tag, but thats life......

I'm archery hunting this year, but my son wanted to rifle hunt still. I was planning on going to Entiat, but then last minute had a feeling we should go to Umtanum. I shot a buck there 9 years ago, but only hunted that unit one time since then and didn't see much. My son, who was with me when I shot the buck 9 years ago, said "let's do it" when I told him of the thought of going to Umtanum. Anyway, after 3 1/3 days of hard hunting - here is the report. We saw 97 deer, but only 4 bucks. Only 1 buck was of decent size, but couldn't find a 3rd point on him. All the does & fawns looked healthy except 2 - one doe was pretty skinny & another doe had a bit of a blotchy coat. Unfortunately he didn't get a shot opportunity, but it's always great being out there!  Thanks to those who responded earlier!

We have been elk hunting muzzy that unit about 5 years. Never seen a lot of deer. But i saw more this year. I think the logging might help the deer numbers.
