Vancouver Lake
« on: November 18, 2013, 08:45:18 AM »
Just curious if anyone has ever hunted by boat out on Vancouver Lake?  I live near the lake and drive by it every day and always see rafts of birds out on the water.  I would think setting up off the big island might be kind of good and wondering if anybody has tried it.

Thanks,

Jesse

There may actually be a blind on the north side of the island. Saw one there a couple summers ago when boating around the lake.

Good to know, thanks!  I'm not sure if the duck hunting is very good on the lake, everything I see seems to be out in the middle in the open water.  Probably would need a layout boat or something to be effective.  One of the Game Wardens that I talked to out at Shillapoo said the duck hunting wasn't very good on the lake but then I always see big rafts of birds out there.  Maybe they are all coots and cormorants  :dunno:

I've shot a few ducks from the shore on the Park side, further down the straightaway. Always had lots of dekes out.

I had good luck with pintails later in the season last year. I enjoyed my hunts better during the week.

We had built many blinds on the island over the years.  Only bad thing is during the summer, kids would get to them and usually start fires in them.  We used to have a large one on the west side of the island and we had a decent one on the east side of the island.  Someone had built one on the north side back in the day.  The NW, W and SW side always seems to hunt the best.  Coming in on the NW corner is the shallowest side as well.  It used to hunt really good back in the days when they first dredged it back in the early 80's.  There used to be a nice pond in the middle.
