On the Matanuska river that boarders the town. You will get bruised legs from all the Salmon going by.  The Knick river is right there (in Alaska terms) also.  You will need to keep an eye on the bears in the area.  :yike:

My brother used to live there, now he is on the Kenai but will probably be moving back for his wife's with as he works on the slope 3 weeks on and 3 off. We did a little silver fishing and I liked the Little Su the best. We bank fished with Pixies and did okay but other people fly fishingpnearby hammered them. With a small boat I bet you could get into some great fishing. I would love to king fish there but only one keeper per day is like torture if they are running and hitting.

My favorite stomping grounds for about 9 years.  Little Su, Deshka, Alexander, Talkeetna, Willow, Montana, Little Willow, any tribes off the Big Su and finally Matsu for Chums only....  Jim Creek and Knik River are a couple stops where if you do not mind every person that commutes to work from the valley to Anchorage stops before and after work.... And late in the evening the crack heads take over...  Not a good place I would want to take a visitor to get that AK experience, really a *censored* hole type fishing area..  Snaggers and rippers....  Although used to run the boat all the way up to Jim Lake and good fishing right at the beginning of the creek for Silvers....

Ought to get your cousin to buy an extreme shallow running with a tunnel for the jet, especially the Little Su, launch and run up river, man a whole new world for fishing for sure...  My #1 spot I used to go...  The Deshka is hot sometimes (Plugs and spinners- pink and slow as you can retrieve used to be the ticket!)..   Used to be extremely good, again if you do not mind being anchored by 300 of your best friends from Anchorage.

The Big Su is the hwy, so a big boat is handy there, but then again it is only for moving to the good rivers - Deshka, Alexander and Talkeetna, which all end up where the big Jets cannot navigate...     Willow and Montana are walking rivers, but I used to come up the from the Big Su and fish holes nobody could possibly walk too...  Little Su, you can walk to a couple limited areas but so will everyone else...  Big Boys (Jets only) cut across from Anchorage, but better know the tides really well, 25ft swings...  Did it a couple times and beached the boat til the tide came up....  Outside of Palmer you can ATV into the Matsu to the sloughs for decent Silver fishing, but really good for nasty chums, but fun...

Man this brings back excellent memories and I freaking miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
