Is it possible to draw two tags for elk?
« on: January 05, 2014, 12:26:48 PM »
My hunting buddy told me about a guy he ran into this year that was holding a Peaches ridge tag AND a Teanaway bull tag.  He told my buddy that he called WDFW who told him he could only shoot one bull, but that he could hunt both areas until he got one.  The story from him was that he passed on a big bull from Peaches knowing he could find something bigger in Teanaway?  He had a guide in Peaches.  My buddy had given him some info on Teanaway and told him not to shoot anything to small there and he ended up filling his tag with a 280 class bull from Teanaway...

I had thought winning a tag was like hitting the lotto?  So did this guy hit the lotto twice in the same season?  Anybody know this guy or hear this story?  How is this even remotely possible?  I am short of some info obviously, as this is third hand info.  I can find out what type of tag after I talk to my buddy later today.   I hear the fella is from Gig Harbor if that helps...

You can draw multiple elk tags, but only kill one.  That's why you should be careful when putting in for special permits. Quality, bull and cow permits could all be drawn in the same year, that's why with 19 points this year I ghost point all but quality.

You draw permits that you can use your one tag on.  You can draw one permit from each category that applies to you--quality bull, bull, antlerless, disabled, senior, etc.  Unless a master hunter then you can draw a permit that allows you to purchase a second tag.  I think this is how it works.

This brings up a gripe for many of us on this site.  Wasted tags!!  I think your name should be pulled from that species when you draw your first elk tag, not talking about second deer.  Or make guys pick the one tag they want and have a second left over tag drawing. They could even charge us another app fee for the second drawing, revenue for them and no wasted tags for us!

If you did that then it keeps those guys in the game even longer accumulating more points making it more difficult for everyone else to draw.  I don't see an issue with having a bull permit and an antlerless permit in the same season.

He told my buddy he had asked if he could turn one tag in for points, letting it go back into circulation for everyone else.  WDFW told him no.

Seems highly improbable tho.... Any math majors our there?  What are the odds of this happening?

Probably not that improbable if he had lots of points (max plus some poacher points) and if he had put in for permits with few applicants and multiple permits available.  Also, average points of user could be a couple guys with high points and a lot of guys with one point--so that could be misleading, especially when they square the points.

People need to read the regs. You could draw a quality bull, regular bull and cow tag in one season. If you have alot of points in each its dumb to put it for all 3.

NO.

You can, however, draw more than one permit.

Tags are purchased, not drawn.

 :yeah:

I, for instance, drew a QUALITY BULL permit, a Bull permit and a COW permit this year.

Blew all of my points.

I wasted the BULL and COW permits because I was only going to hunt the QUALITY BULL permit once I drew that.

Oh, well.....

The only way I know of to be able to shoot two elk is if you are a hunter safety instructor and you draw on of the incentive tags.  That is the only way I know of to shoot more than one elk.  And that may be only if you qualify for the online incentive tag. I'd have to re-read the packet to know for sure but when I read it to my husband we both agreed that is what it said.

If you win one of the raffle elk tags you have the option of buying a second elk tag.

Raffle, auction, incentive, hunter education, master hunter. While a person could potentially possess more than two tags, he may not legally kill more than two elk in one season.
