Cowiche general bow season

Does anyone have any idea why the Cowiche GMU 368 does NOT have a general archery season for elk?  I have hunted in this GMU for years as a rifle hunter and now that i have switched to bow I have to to be drawn to hunt elk in there at all (frustrating)   Makes zero sense to me as they continue to raise the rifle cow permits (now up to 250) indicating to me the cow to bull ratio must be off a bit.  All the more reason to have a general archery season for cows and spikes.  Maybe I am missing something here??.?  Anyone with any insight?

But if you hunt blackpowder there you appreciate the chance to hunt one place that nobody has already chased them into their secret tunnels before you got there.

Naches Sportsman, I think you missed the question...why does the state not allow it?  My reasons for hunting there doesn't really matter to you does it?  Maybe I just like it.  If you don't know then don't answer.

Quality bull only.  Its one of two yakima units set aside for a truly quality rut hunt, although the season is way too early in september but thats a different subject.  I believe the game department tries to rotate the units around a bit.  If you look at all the yakima units some are open during archery but not muzzleloader or muzzleloader but not archery.  I'm sure this is done to minimize harvest rather than offer a quality experience but if you play the special permit game right it does offer some truly quality hunts.

Why would someone want to hunt the cowiche in the summer? Hell, you can shoot a cow and spike in the 352,356, and 364. If you want to hunt cowiche, the late season provides ample oppurtunity to take a cow. Having both the 364 and 368 open for cows during late season gives you some good spots up there.

Or if you want to hunt the cowiche so bad, go back to rifle.

  Why would you not want to hunt Cowiche in the summer?  Lots of elk, dark timber mixed with sage.  Lots of room to roam and good access.  Its an elk hunters paradise.  If it would open for early elk I would hunt it in a heart beat.  However I hope they don't open it as it is a fantastic quality permit to draw and that unit holds some of the largest bulls in Yak county.

I agree that it's a fantastic GMU.  Just seems strange that they are raising the rifle cow permits while they keep restricting the bow hunters.  As nice as the country is it would be nice to be able to hunt it during the rut even if only for spikes.  Every 5-6 years ( could be more) to hunt it is frustrating.  Thanks for the feedback

The reason why they keep raising the cow permits, is Allen vanwyke who owns a lot of ground up there, which is all posted is in a heated battle with wdfw. He is a good friend of mine and was also told that from a gammie friend of mine skip. Allen wants the elk off his ground! The feed there is for cattle not the elk.
