C'mon, Smossy. You are an Old Salt, right? Pay attention:1. Buy your hunting license (2014). As long as the license contains "bear," then you will be fine. (The weapon does not matter for bear.)2. At the same time (or you can do it later, but you will have to pay the dealer fee again), buy a "Special Hunt Application, Bear." (Item #052) It costs all of $6.60.3. After you purchase your license, go to the web page for special hunt applications. If you have purchased your bear application, the option to choose your Spring Bear permit will automatically be listed.4. Choose from 1 to 4 options (you don't have to choose all 4, although you should). Choose the hardest to draw GMUs first. No, you do not need any banked points to apply. You will get 1 point for buying the 2014 application; thus, your odds will not be great. However, not too many people apply for the Spring Bear hunt, so your chances of drawing this year are not terribly bad.Do this before March 1st.
You don't need to buy a 2014 hunting license to apply for bear. Other animals, yes.

Thanks for the information though. It seemed kinda complicated. So I need to actually buy the tags first, buy a special hunt application for bear, then go to the web and add my permit or something? After all that choose options FOR the spring bear hunt, how do I know what gmu's are try to draw for, is there a listing?
I did it. It's a drawing I guess, so no purchase necessary at the time you put in. I put in for my multi-season elk permit and spring bear tag.......I just followed the directions......

Because the hunts all occur from April 15th to May 31st (some to June 15th) in 2014. (Remember: Our hunting seasons run from April 1st to March 31st.)2. Yes, you have to buy the hunting license, and the special application, before you can apply for the Spring Bear permit. This is the very same system for all of the special applications.3. For the various GMUs, this really depends on where you live, and how far you are willing to drive. First, look here: http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/harvest/2012/reports/bear_hunt_name.php4. Next, look at the 2013 hunting regulations (I know, 2013 regulations doesn't make sense for a 2014 hunt, but this is how it is done). Go to Page 63. This lists the 2014 Spring Bear seasons. Toggle back and forth between the 2012 hunting results, and the 2014 seasons, and make your choices. You can choose up to 4 GMUs.For me, I only select the GMUs in a certain corner of the state. For others, they will choose a different region. If I had more time & gas money, I would focus on Skagit, but that is just me.
Appreciate the information fellas. Ill take everyone's information and collaborate them to make my own decision. Just needed a push in the right direction.

You do not need a hunting license to apply. You need a BEAR LICENSE, 2 different things. $38 for both my apps with NO hunting license required.
Ok so at this point then it sounds like choosing GMU's are going to be the most complicated now.
I'm not to get into it with you know-it-all hunters. What does a Game Warden ask for when he checks you, a HUNTING license. You guys can argue all day, because I guess that's what you guys like to do. Have fun.........
So yeah, to expand on Timberstalker's post, he's right, you really don't buy a "hunting license." But it's just semantics. You buy a tag. Then you buy an application and apply for a special permit. Often people talk about applying for tags. You don't apply for tags, you buy them. You also don't buy special permits, as people often say. You buy the application. You draw special permits.
Yes, you do need a hunting license to apply. To apply for any special permits you always need the hunting license first, with the exception of moose, sheep, and mountain goat. You could do as campmeat did and only purchase the bear hunting license, but you might as well get the entire package- deer, elk, bear, and cougar. It's cheaper to buy it that way.
I'm not blaming anyone specific about arguing. But, this happens every time when something isn't spelled out perfectly by some members. If some one can't figure it out without others being so precise and butting in, it's irritating. Things are so simple, then it turns into a peeing match.
