Salt Water line?
« on: February 15, 2014, 06:47:14 PM »
For saltwater salmon fishing what type of line does everyone use?   Will be mostly trolling with downriggers.  Mono or Braid pros and cons?

For trolling with downriggers:  25# Izorline

For Jigging:  65# PowerPro with 4' section of 25# Izorline

Braid with a top shot of mono. I like to have a little stretch with the mono, I feel more fish make it to the boat that way.

I run 25lb mono on my DR rods.

Most of the time its Berkley Big Game.

If I'm trolling deep, 200'+ at Neah Bay I'll run 50lb Jerry Brown braid.

I jig for kings....fish the downriggers for silver's and use #20 izorline for both. I usually just fish a whole herring only off the riggers so you may want to go to #25 if you use flashers. I have used #20 izorline for years with no problems and lots of fish.....hope that helps...Les

Bottom fish: 85lbs braid, 500 yards on my avet lx

Salmon 250 yards 50lbs braid on my level wind jigging/casting rod, 400 yards 50 braid  on my downrigger/mooching rod

I never use mono, except for pre-tied salmon leaders, or flurocarbon for everything but kings
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I smoke two fish in the morning, I smoke two fish at night, I smoke two fish in de afternoon makes me feel alright

I use 65lb power pro for all bottom fish except Halibut. I use 100 lb power pro for that with 200 lb mono leader and 2 hooks. 2 at a time is always better.
I use 65 lb braid on Tekota 600 for salmon with 100 lb mono and 8/0 hooks in whole herring. They NEVER get off. Remember , in the salt salmon are not leader or line shy. We catch tons of fish. We target BIG kings . They NEVER chew thru our leader. Commercial fishermen fish primarily for kings and do not have anything less than 100lb for leader.

65 lb braid. Less drag and lasts forever compared to mono.
