East Cape Baja
« on: April 22, 2014, 09:17:58 PM »

The Sea of Cortez and Baja region has always intrigued me. So decided to fly down and explore the area.

Brought along a 10 wt and a spinning rod in hopes of catching a pez de gallo (rooster fish). Made arrangements and flew into San Jose del Cabo.  I did research and found a reasonable rental car at Cactus car rental for $250 a week. Plan was to travel to Cabo Pulmo ( national Eco reserve) for a few days then up to Las Barriles for fishing. Navigating through all of the time shares at airport was interesting.

Most of road was paved last 30 miles was dirt road. Had to watch out for cows

Found the hotel in Cabo Pulmo. Cabo Pulmo is a beautiful area but is undeveloped and has no electricity. A very small village with a few cafes and dive shops

Here is a view of Cabo Pulmo from Above. Woke up early and hiked up a nearby mountain to get some pics

Hit the nearby beach for snorkeling . Because of the protected status no fishing was permitted.

I saw some sea lions about a half a mile away sunning on rocks and decided to get a closer look and swam up to them

It was funny because they were following me and very curious

Next day found a guide with a panga and caught dorado, Bonita ( quite the fight) and Sierra (mackerel )
Always amazes me how strong fish in the oceans fight.

Sierra

Dorado

After the trip made some ceviche from the Sierra. Diced onions, avocado, cukes, Serrano chilis diced and lime juice  Nothing like fresh ceviche  and cerveza

After 3 days packed up and drove up to Las Barriles about 2 hours away. Booked two half days in a panga.

Early morning before heading out

Stopping by a boat to pick up bait for the day . Ballyhoo seemed to work best. Very few anchovies in the area
