Capitol Peak elk

Has anyone even seen a elk during elk season in the capitol peak unit?

 Just wondering. I don't hunt the unit for elk but I have seen some elk sign but never a elk. Let's hear of some success stories.

Took these pictures of the Capitol Peak elk herd this morning. about 15 bulls in there.

I've heard of a lot of guys drooling over "that herd". They appear to be very comfortable where they live. I'm sure some of the locals have ins a and get after 'em. Tough nut to crack, imo.

I have only seen them under the power lines where they cross Delphi rd near cedar flats road.

I've hunted that heard 3 seasons it's 5 min from my house literally! Very tough hunt they stay mostly on private land but if u know there routine and are patient it can be done

thats exactly where this picture was taken. I lived off cedar flats for about 6 years and have taken delphi up to Capitol for years and have never seen an elk there until just the other day.


Theres another herd (I'm assuming) in little rock at the old weeks dairy farm which is now a refuge so thats a no go. I counted about 60 this year and its getting bigger and bigger. They spend about 4-6 months in that field safe and sound.

Yes. It seems that those elk like the private land there. I always wondered if you accessed the power lines area from the hwy 8 access and worked you way down there if you wouldn't get lucky.

from what i understand that heard is protected that's why there so comfortable

I think they spend some time in that rock quarry off Delphi RD. Fun to look at.

Ya know I don't really mind that that they hang out in the protected areas I've personally watched the herd grow every year with more and more bulls albeit tag horns and spikes.

The herd will eventually grow to where they don't fit in that area and have to spend it else where or they are easily found in transit from one area to the next. Kind of hard to miss 100 elk movin through.

Everyone in the area knows about them, only a a very few know where they go and how to hunt them.  Once season is upon us they will stay on private land, travel at night can be 10 miles away in a single night.  There are 2 types of people who hunt that herd successfully, those who are very dedicated and poachers.

Never hunted em but I always wondered and suspected they headed west during hunt season.  Not the littlerock bunch.

keep in mind that some of the land that the power lines are on are federal property and we are at work all through the season.  But good luck to ya all  .  US Dept of Energy, BPA

Ran into one of your old buddies hunting them a couple years ago while I was hunting a late deer permit.
