Kettle Range Moose
« on: June 18, 2014, 07:08:52 AM »
 :hello: All,
Well I never dreamed this would happen, BUT, with 19 points I was fortunate to draw a Kettle Range moose permit.
38 years of experiences hunting deer, elk, bear, and birds-------Zero experience with moose.
There is much to learn to become successful at this hunt and I am looking forward to the challenge & knowledge this will bring with it.

Any advise, knowledge, pointers, etc. of the Kettle Range moose area would be greatly appreciated.

After reading through all 41 pages  :yike:  in "other big game", there is very little info about the Kettle area. When my hunt has come and gone, I hope to be able to help others in the future who draw this permit.

Thank you for any advise your willing to share.

I have only been on one moose hunt in the kettle range so take it for what its worth, Im sure there are guys that could give better advice than me, but my advice is about the same as any new area or species, scout as often as you can over there, do your best to talk with some local hunters who might have an idea of where the moose are moving, and practice from now till the season on your moose calling. I know that later on in the season we were told those moose bunch up and if you could find them you could pretty much pick the one you wanted and take him. Now if you wait that long you run the risk of the rut being over and those things become increasingly harder to hunt that way. It was a gamble for us so the approach we took was driving around roads until we found a place where we saw lots of fresh rubs or if it looked like a "moosey" area. We stopped at that point and let out a couple calls, usually no more than 2 or 3. When those bulls were rutting hard and if there were any in the area whatsoever they would generally be right up at us within 5 minutes, 10 at the most. It didn't take them long at all. If nothing showed up after about 10 minutes or less, we would keep driving. These animals sure like to walk the roads. My thought is the more miles you put on, the greater chance at spotting one walking the road. Sun up to sundown on the bumpy roads of the kettle range sure beats you up but stick with it....they are over there and I don't think you will have trouble finding a bull. We harvested 2 that year. 35" and a 40".

Do your homework and put in the time and you should get lucky with one. I would take a look up Long Alec rd just outside of Curlew, there were a couple really nice spots to stop and call. Like I said, take it for what is worth but that was our experience with moose in the kettle range.

I will be happy with any respectable bull. Hoping that I can "stick to my guns" and get 1 with archery

[/q    uote]Yeah the fence is up, pics coming soon, You may want to buy a map from bearpaw, I did it a couple years ago for a spring bear hunt and I think its a bargain  for what fuel costs today. Heck I was thinking I was the lucking one to draw a peaches ridge rifle bull tag tell I seen you had a moose tag :chuckle:

For what its worth, there are some great thick swamps off of Hall Creek Road that hold moose, we had a dandy bull walk right down the road to us the last year we were hunting deer in that area. Lots of moose sign off the roads in the brush and timber too. :twocents:
