I am looking at the ascents also for early elk. did you wear any base layers for wicking moisture?

I didn't that day. The pant material wicked any moisture quick. I'm not a fan of sitkas microfleece pockets as they seem to wick and hold moisture in my pockets.

On multi day trips or if it is chilly I will wear my Sitka merino bottoms or icebreaker bottoms.

Most of mine have vented pockets.  Best way I know how to describe it is that it is sort of like football jersey material only stretchy.  I wonder why they went to the fleece.  That is one of the things I always disliked about the 90% pant.  That micro fleece is like Velcro when I'm trying to get a glove covered hand inside.  Weird they would go to that on the Ascent pant >:(

Been wearing the Ascent pants last three years. Nothing better. Even in cooler temps in the 40-50s wear them all summer scouting, fishing, etc. Climbed St Helens wearing them thru the lava rock and held up great. Picked up a pair in clay this year. Very comfortable pants compared to the Mtn. pants.

Love my ascent pants been wearing them for years. They dont repel water at all tho instant soak thru. My girlfriend bought a pair of Koppen pants that seemed real similar to my acsent pants and they repelled water well and half the price

Shane, my ascents beaded water really well.  Did your DWR wear off or were they always that way?

I've never used the Kuiu Tiburon pant.  How are you liking the 2way stretch of the tiburon compared to the 4way of the ascent?  I need all the extra movement/flexibility I can get through the thighs.

The four way stretch of the Acsents is more "stretchy", buy in a hiking aspect,  the Tiburon pants have all the stretch a guy needs. At least for me and I HATE restriction.

Also, all of my Acsents pants still bead off water well. I was always impressed with that. I tend to wear my hunting pants a lot before they see the washer.  Even when it'd soak in on the lower legs, it was quick to dry. Haven't had a chance to test the Tiburons in wet weather yet.

I've been using Nikwax Polar Proof for quite some time.  It works good on my fleece vests and on all the Sitka gear.  I've been afraid to use it on my Gore-Tex rainwear, but I have used it on my Gore-Tex bird pants after they start to get a few briar holes.  Hasn't seemed to hurt them at all.  It's not extremely long lasting when busting wet huckleberry bushes, but I've been very pleased with the stuff.  http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=40

I've been looking at sitka, but I can't afford multiple sets of pants. If I were to buy one pair of pants, what would you suggest? If I were to buy a second pair, it would be a waterproof set to layer over the top. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. Hopefully I could afford to get the matching jacket(s) also.

I've had the chance to wear both the mountain pants and the ascent pants as well.  The ascent pants are definitely where it's at for early season hunting.  I have several sets of them and the water beads up pretty good on the outside.  Not sure why yours soaks straight through Shane?

What sort of hunting do you do more often? Warm weather or cold?
I'd look hard at the Mountain pants or the Timberline pants if it were me. I hunted last early September elk in my Mountain pants for 5 days and they were good-great. A little warm but nothing to worry much about.
As far as rain pants, any of the new Sitka rain gear is too rich for my blood. I have a set of the older Sitka Nimbus stuff which is great.

If I could only buy one pair of pants it would be the mountain pants.  May run a tad warm in September and a little cold in November/December but they will work.

I wore my mountain pants from August to December last year and only changed my base layer around and was always comfortable.

Ascent are perfectly fine, if you only can get 1 set go with the mountain pants. I wear them during early archery with core base layer. Great pant!
