Whiskey Dick Wind Farm
« on: August 12, 2014, 02:10:24 PM »
You guys ever see wild birds in here?  i.e. Pheasant?

I was thinking this may be a nice place to take the dogs this year?

Thanks for any tips.

Curtis

There isn't any pheasant habitat out there. Any pheasants you find are going to be the planted birds.

I've seen pheasant in there, but mostly chukar. Used to be lots of 'em but I haven't hunted it since they put the wind farm in. Probably not going to either...hate them machines.

...and sh*tty roads, think YTC style. As for birds, like others said, not much habitat for pheasants or quail, but have heard there are chukar in there.

OK LOL maybe I'll hold off.  I beat my truck up pretty good last year and I need to be a little better to it.

Is it just me or are wild chukar and pheasant tough to find within 2-3 hours of west side?

I don't think it's unfair to say that pheasant are slowly going the way of the Dodo. They are a private land bird dependent on private land practices that favor them.

Pheasant and chukar also have one big strike against them. They are imports. Once they are gone, they are gone. The state most likely won't do much to bring them back unless it involves something that favors native species.

Yeah I get that.  I don't blame people for not giving up their honey holes either.  It would be nice to see more effort put into them, whether they're natives or not.

Honestly I just got into upland birds over the last few years though and I am LOVING it.  Spending time with the wife and the pup, just walking some fields or hills and lookin for a bird to shoot!

You should be able to get into some pretty good chukar and quail hunting within 3 hours of Seattle. But for pheasants you need to drive a little further.

Pheasants don't do well around here.  All are pen-raised and planted by the game department.  I've had to get out of the truck and shoo them off the road to keep from running over them.  Any pheasants that survive the dogs and hunters more than a couple of days are an easy meal for the coyotes...  Quail and Chukhar are well established.  Chukhar are maddening to hunt.  Quail, on the other hand, are fun.  You and the dog can scatter a covey, and hunt the singles ALL DAY!  Back when I had a dog, we had a lot of fun hunting Quail!  :twocents:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
