Hey, have any of you guys had any luck baiting for whitetails? If so what kind of baits were you using? What do you think they like best/get hooked on? I've tryed some and they seem not to like it to much.Thanks for any info!

A mixture of apples and rocky mountain sweet feed, you can get it at Big R. Once you have them coming in you can supplement with alfalfa.

ya nothing wrong with baiting at all, some could say a blind or tree stand isnt hunting either...... corn/alfalfa works great

what are the laws for baiting big game animals??
i have heard several different things and have tried to look and find it but have not come up with anything? anyone help???

Hey there, HoytStaff guy... Come on now... have you ever actually heard anyone say that a tree stand or blind isn't hunting? I never have. This is a bait issue here.

backyard bucks. I have a letter from fish and game stating that baiting for big game animals like deer and elk are legal in this state. Bears a no no. So if you wish to bait for deer and elk go ahead and have fun. Set up a trail can and see what you can find. When I get to work I can give you their exact words

FC2038 is right, it is legal....except bears.

IMO-- legal doesn't mean it's ethical.

what is unethical about baiting deer or elk? sitting on the egde of a field in a stand or blind is the same, just using natural bait......

If you dont like it don't do it, simple as that... I agree if you dont like baiting you probable shouldn't hunt in a tree stand over a food plot. That is baiting at an extreme level in my opinion, and thats all it is, an opinion. Good luck.

PS: this time of year around my area hay stacks are a great location to hunt, farmers like it to because the deer mess them up pretty bad.

Hunting a 10, 20 or 100 acre field is not the same as a pile of apples or corn. If you can justify it
in your mind, so be it. It's just not hunting to me.

i was just curious is all because for ever i was under the idea that it was illegal to do so. that is why i was wondering on how people would ask about it is all..

Just because I think it is a good way to hunt doesn't mean its the only way to hunt. I haven't acutally shot a deer on bait since '99

100 acres of alfalfa, perfect, I can choose which one I want bring in 50 deer instead of 4 or 5.

i think it is funny how someone will tell another what is hunting and what isn't.
each to their own if it is legal so be it.
i personally love to sit in a treestand above old apple trees any chance i can get.

I agree with one of the last posts, you need to remember we are all hunters. Just because you may not agree with something doesn't mean you have to bust some body for it. I like trapping, you don't have to, because we didn't band together on that issue we pretty much lost it. We don't want to loose hunting do we? You can't start banning certain areas, if you do it wont stop, they will keep going, starting with bow hunting, then high power rifles. Stick together.

Hunting to me means getting in the wood and still hunting, moving slow, sitting for hours, having stare down contests with
deer 10 feet from you while you are stuck in the middle of a step for a half an hour. Giving the deer every advantage, and
still filling your tag is what hunting is to me. Would I sit by an old apple tree in the woods, you bet, would I sit on the edge of
a alfalfa field, absolutely. But, to make an artificial bait and sit over it diminishes the trophy to me.

This is simply how I feel, bait if you want to, it is your right to do so.

with all that said and done back to the original post.
this year i have come across several spots. (east and west) where i have found someones piles of corn, apples, or blocks. and even hanging feeders with peanut butter all over the place.

not sure what is the best for baiting them since i haven't done it but all those looked interesting enough to me.
each time i would walk in front of the cameras and smile and wave.

One thing that worked really well for me this year in the scouting season for one of my cameras was a 50 pound sack of trace granual salt spread over about a 4ft area. It sokes into the ground and the animals love it. I got 167 pics in 5 days of everything form nice bucks to coyotes to a little black bear.

It doesn't matter what you use for bait, there is still no guarentee that the animals will come in while you're setting there.

Best whitetail bait i have ever seen is...fresh logged trees, the trees that are covered in that black moss
