poop question...
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:25:04 PM »
So I was out last night and ran across a trail that had a decent amount of bear poop on it I would say 7 - 10 piles just on the trail, about a 200 yard section. All of the poop is old though, dried out. I would say this summers poop but I'm no poop expert. So I'm hoping to find some poop experts  :chuckle: here to give me some advise. Since the poop seems that old should I still be hunting this area for the year or should I assume that they have moved on to a better area or were shot...? Looks like there are still berries of some sort in there. Tons of those white berries and some others as well. I am not a berry expert either... wish I was. Any advise greatly appreciated!

Without pics it is hard to answer any of your questions. Bear crap can dry out in a couple of days if in the sun. Not knowing what is in it makes it hard to say where you should concentrate your time.

I would suggest learning and finding the current food source and see if you can fresh sign.

I don't think the bear eat much of those white berrys. The fresh sign in seeing is dark redish with plenty of seeds. Here they're just finishing up the hawthorn berry's and starting in on the wild rose pods and what I call grouse berry's ( little red berry that grows about 2"-3" tall and looks like red hots.

good luck

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. The poop was dark reddish and full of seeds of about the side of large bb's. I think I saw plants that resembled the wild rose pods... Maybe that's what they were eating. The names of those different berries will be very helpful Jasnt! Thanks again!

You'll know hawthorns when you see or touch em. They'll tear you up. I just took one this past weekend in a hawthorn patch.

Did you step in the poop? I always do this to get the scent on my boots. Also the outside can be deceiving as to how dry it is.

Also is there any water near by. They'll need a lot this time of year.

I stepped in the poop just to see if it was solid, just crumbled, although maybe I need to examine them closer next time to see if they have any moisture to them any deeper.

I am always hunting around creeks/watering holes, so I should be good there.

Congrats on getting one Florida_Native and thanks for the advise!

Yesterday I jumped a bear from the hawthorns. They could still be feeding on the over ripe ones still high in the trees or the other berrys that grown under the hawthorns. Either way its a good spot for bear this time of year
