Any handy cap hunters out there?
« on: September 25, 2014, 11:20:22 AM »
I am asking because a guy at work has a companion card or he says he does.

What does the companion card do for the handy cap hunter?  Do they just retrieve the animal?  If so, why do they need a companion card as you would just ride along with him/her.

You can shoot the animal for him if he chooses to let you do so

Copied from the regs, page 92:

"The hunter who qualifies for a Disabled Hunter
Permit will receive the permit, an orange vehicle
placard, and a designated hunter companion card.
The hunter companion card allows for a person to
assist or act on behalf of the disabled hunter. The
hunter companion must be in the physical presence
of the disabled hunter, not to exceed a ¼ mile
separation. While stalking or shooting an animal,
the hunter and companion must have a form of
reliable and direct communication."

It is better to be consistently incorrect than inconsistently correct...

OK, just so I get this straight.

I go elk hunting with Blazinfish.  He hands me his companion card.  He is 300 yards from me and we have radios so we are in direct communication.

Bull/cow comes in and I arrow it for him.   That is completely legal, correct?

Don't you hate when York hunting buddies are dicks. Well i just hope he doesn't see this before you need help packing an elk out next week. He might think you are the dick

The correct term is a "hunter with a disability."

Hey TheHunt, this is your old friend Muskrat. I am a disabled hunter, and everything said above is true. One thing not said is that the companion hunter card is received when the Disabled person buys their hunting license. It is a super program. I have not needed my companion hunter yet except for retrieving
my downed animals. I must say my companion hunter is almost as bad off as me.
Those deer get heavier every year. Good luck pal. Chuck (Muskrat)

My wife is wheelchair bound and I shoot for her.  No way she could fill the freezer without the companion card.  The program is an amazing way to add purpose and value to people whose life has been limited by a disability. And the smile on her face when her tag gets punched is priceless.
