Just finished the hunt at Manashtash. Saw a few cows going fast and several bulls too big to shoot. Amazingly they were holding to the same area day after day, despite the inconsiderate people setting up camps and walking through our hunting. Both modern and muzzle loaders. But they definitely weren't in herds or groups. And the thicker the cover the better. Tough hunting when it sounds like you're walking on corn flakes!

We had the same problem during archery season this year primarily due to the excessive amount of new hunters to the area.  I shot a 3x3 opening day & didn't see another elk all week.  Our honey-holes were overrun with new hunters running through the bedding areas & the herds just went away.  This was my 20th season hunting the area and it was the worst it's ever been!  We spoke to at least three hunters that moved into the area because of the big fire up north.  It was enough for me to start researching new areas & I've killed elk 3 of the last 4 years in Manashtash.
Hunt hard.  Hunt with intensity.  Earn your trophy.

My buddy passed on 5-6 Bulls the first 3 days of his hunt including a nice 300 class 6 point at 40 yards that I wouldnt have passed on, but it was his tag. People really started rolling in on Friday and hunting was pretty slow after that. He got a shot off about mid week at a 6 point that didn't conect and then nothing till the last 2 days of the season when we got right in the middle of a good herd with 2 big Bulls witch lead to one more missed shot on a great bull. Couldn't make it happen but he said he had a great time.

But the local Mexican hunters probably don't want any outsiders like yourself hunting their home turf.    :o    :dunno:

hunted 12-13hrs a day for 7 days...nothing in that area.  was high, on a stand, steep and deep, cool wallows next to the creek, along the creek, deep in the thick woods, zig zagging hillsides...all for naught.  one cow taken early opening day and a spike later in the week.  a female cougar was also taken late in the week.  I was on stand before sunrise and slowly stalking at sunset.  saw the ass end of a nice muley and a 5x6 at 20yds...for show only.  heard the bugling at night, plenty of moon for nighttime feeding, lots of quad/trucks going up and down the road.  should have brought the camo flip flops ,shorts and wife beater shirt.  5 "new" hunters to the same spot where we were all alone years past...all with cow tags.  coyotes running at night.  even in the deep of shadow creek not really any good sign at least that was fresh.  so deep no sun but with water and no life.  5 miles in not even any good sign and no live animals.  time to move on down the line.  bottom line...armed hiking only... :bash:
