My first speed goat (NE Texas)
« on: December 07, 2014, 08:43:55 PM »
My buddy called and told me he had an experimental antelope tag in the Ne panhandle of Texas and asked if I wanted to go on an antelope hunt? He said The experimental tag is no cost. I bought a 5 day non-res hunting liscense for $58.00 and that was it.. My buddy and his girl are the nicest people ever! So hospitable! His uncle owns a few sections about an hour or so east of Amarillo and that's where we hunted. I had one full day and then 3 hours the next morning to hunt before heading to the airport. We saw at least a hundred goats on Saturday. Unfortunately most we're on neighboring property which we were told were completely off limits. Of course all the huge bucks were on the opposite properties, but still cool to at least glass them up and see some real nice animals. So Saturday evening I had a shot at a decent buck but way further than I've ever  shot  at.. 448yrds ( I'm an archer so that seemed like a mile away) one shot and just under him.. No 2nd shot. Within two seconds they were a mile away and just getting further by the second. Off to dinner with my head hung low!! Up early the next morning and we watch a buck chasing a doe like crazy. He wasn't very big, but legal. He said to maybe pass on this one as he probably won't taste very good from all the rut crazed running. So we pass. Clock is ticking now. I've got two hours before I have to head to the airport. About 20 minutes later we spot two lone bucks just hanging out in a field. He says " well not the biggest, but if you want an antelope they're both legal". 248yrds and done deal! One shot from the .270 and dead in his tracks!! My first antelope is down! And dang are thy small critters! I don't feel so bad missing the first one now! Lol.... So we hurried with the cleaning, took it to the butcher, and headed strait to the airport. Awesome trip with a great friend on a whim! Annnnd other than the airfare cost me 58 bux!! Oh and it tastes great!! Steaks, burgers and especially the jalapeno smoked broughts!! Can't wait for next year. !! Didn't have much time for good field photos but got a picture or two at least on my phone. We really had to hurry!

I'd say your best bet is to get a buddy who lives in NE Texas.
Really cool hunt though. So different than around here. Almost Zero vegitation out there. You could see as far as your bino's would let you!

Unique!  Always like goats with the odd horns.  Congratulations
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
