300 S. A. Ultra Mag
« on: December 16, 2014, 09:40:24 PM »
Does anyone own the 300 SAUM? How does it shoot? How easy is ammo to find for it? I ask because every time I go to Cabelas in Lacey I see the same rifle in the used section. The 24 inch barrel and weight of the rifle is real appealing but I never see ammo for it. I already own a 300 RUM and am in the market to either get work done on the RUM (replace the wood stock and other minor things) or get a new rifle (cant have to many). The more I think about it a new 30-06 maybe in the future. Easy to find ammo and on hell of an all around gun.

I do...I love the 300 short mags...I don't know how hard ammo is to find in the store because I reload.  Mine shoots well, but I'm not a bench rest, precision shooter either.  On bulls and muley bucks it worked well.  As long as you plan ahead or reload I wouldn't worry about ammo...but you are not going to roll into the little gas/sporting shop in podunk town and pick up a box of shells.

It is a less popular caliber than the .300 WSM...but is identical in performance.

The 300 WSM is a lot more popular, and a bit faster.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Great cartridge, but I'd probably only get that rifle if the price was really low, and if I was going to reload for it.
