Night hunting question

I was calling at night this weekend and called in 3 yotes.  It was a thrill to get them in close at night.  The question that I have is do people leave a red filter light on then entire time when calling or just turn it on every so often when they hear noise or is there a method to it?  We weren't able to get any because my brother in law made some noise and wasn't ready to shoot and when I turned the light on it spooked them.  Thanks.

Do you have to keep the light still or can you scan it?

You can leave it on and scan with it. If they are not educated to a light it won't matter if the light is moving or holding still.

This is kind of like the Chevy vs ford conversation!lol I agree with leave it on. When you do locate a coyote put him in the bottom of the light so the main beam isn't highlighting it,them until you are ready to shoot. As for your brother in law,he needs to be ready before the calling ever begins. Just like day hunting,slow movement and always be ready.

we started out with a white light we would point it at the sky and catch them in the dim of the light then when the shooter was ready to shoot we would hit them with the beam ,when we used a red lens they weren't as fussy ,but if there was much moon i would call from the shadow side of a tree ,to try an hide better ,but we always kept the light on ,they come in and leave pretty fast some times

Does anyone use thermal, Digital or Gen 2 or 3 for night hunting ? I know the cost is much more than a spotlight but have not seen any posts here in regards to using night vision and they are all allowed to be used here in Washington. Bob

It is legal for coyotes.

It is legal for coyotes.

The regs says you can hunt coyotes at night with lights, doesn't rule out night vision for them.

Only rules not get vision out for big game.

Just wanna say thanks for this thread......went on my first night hunt tonight but it sucked no activity damn snow Burms kept us close to hwy....going out tomorrow night though more open terrain less snow this time....
