Silk, this has now entered Epic Thread territory. Stop the tick hunting and get back to bear hunting.

Trying to find a basin without elk! I've got ten in my near basin. Not that a bear couldn't go in there as well but I'm on like day 6 in the wilderness, second solo...it's only crazy if it doesn't work.

The bear I missed last week was probably only 250 yds from a bedded bull elk

Don't let the presence of elk make you think that there is no bear in the area. I watched a bear last elk season walk 50 yards or so from elk and deer....they didn't seem to care, and I'm sure they saw him.

Keep at it and enjoy the hunt!

This past year I was following a bear in September trying to catch up and he lead me straight into a herd of elk. One of which took an arrow. I thought the bear was ripping a stump apart but it was a bull raking a tree.

Elk and bears coexist

I never thought of that---what a great strategy.  If the sound of bears crashing through the woods doesn't affect the elk, then you crashing through the woods after the bear should also be true.  (I know, somebody will chirp in that bears are really quiet movers.)  I don't know if I will ever be in that position, but this is good to know.

The bears will start following the lone cows here real soon.  Calves will be dropping in the next 3-4 weeks.

Off the grid?  No action today or you run to Pomeroy for beer?

There's barely any beer in pomeroy. Kinda like elk. Few and far between.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield
