Primer ?
« on: April 17, 2015, 12:39:21 PM »
Hey people have a ? on primers. I went and primed about 50 cases of Ruger 204. Usually use cci 450 mag. Some how I grabbed  :dunno: why small pistol cci mag primers. Just wondering is there to much of a difference? I'm not worried about blowing up  :chuckle: Just wondering if their worth the charge or should I re prime thanks. My signature says it all :chuckle:  ;)

Re prime, small pistol primers are not designed to work at rifle pressures, two to three times greater than a pistol or to ignite the quantities of powder used in a rifle cartridge.  You can sometimes get away with a small pistol primer in a 22 Hornet but I wouldn't go any larger with full power loads.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I've used small pistol primers in .223 cases (because of recent shortages of small rifle primers) with no ill effects.  But you should proceed at your own risk.

At the least, I'd wear safety glasses and a grinding shield would probably be better but the only true way to de-prime them "safely" would be to run them all thru your gun and touch em off.  I've de-primed live primers more times than I'd like to admit and never had a problem but that certainly doesn't mean it's a good idea.

It's kind of funny, I find myself being much more cautious about the little things than I ever was before.  I had this conversation with my dad not to long ago and I jokingly told him, I think I must value my eyes, arms, fingers and legs a lot more than I used to.  He just smiled and said "yeah, they call that maturity, son"  ;)

Fire it in the gun. It's quick and easy and just sounds like a pop-it going off.

They may not be hard enough for your firing pin they may also flow and cut your breach face.

X2!  This would definitely be the prudent choice and ensure no trip to the ER.

My grandfather only had half a index finger on his left hand because on that one time doing something he'd done a thousand times before, his luck ran out and he had one of those "it's all fun and games till someone losses a finger" moments.
