GMU 653 Elk Hunting
« on: July 23, 2015, 03:59:50 PM »
I want to know if anyone that has hunted Elk in the 653 (White River) GMU. Myself and three of my friends got drawn for any Bull Tags during the normal season. We have not hunted that area and wanted to know what look for areas to hunt.

I used to hunt that area as a kid and have hunted it twice with a bow since.  Some really nice bulls.  I always hunted up I think it was the 7200 road up toward the boyscout trail area.  depending on snow probably need to look a little lower.  My buddy had the same normal season tag a few years back and got a nice bull down low in one of the clearings just off 410.  Lot of elk in that area but for being quality is not very quality they have a deer season and I have heard its one of the main areas the Puyallup's hunt, could just be rumor.  I just know the elk were very spooky when I have archery hunted it for being a quality unit.

There are about 7 tribes that hunt that area and the muckleshoots shoot the heck out of them during the rut. Wackem and stakem off of the road is what they do.  I think people get the wrong idea of this area being a quality hunt, your not going to find big bulls in every clear cut.  There are a good number of elk, but you will have your work cut out for you.
