If you boil them, throw out the water, boil em again, then fry them I "think" you can eat them at that point.

lol!! Sounds like a wild turkey recipe.

Here's the thing about Gyromitra. You can eat them many times and not have any ill effects and then just once more, and wham. Very strange mushroom. I've known chefs who buy them but it's not smart.

Found this guy last week in Idaho.   Any idea what it is….looked like a bear was digging them and eating them.

:yike: Looks to me like a destroying angel. Cook it up if you're tired of this life. Otherwise, wash your hands. This time of year, there are only a couple of edibles - morels and porcini/king boletes. Beware of anything else until the lobsters pop in July.

Trying to expand my knowledge past spring morels

I was wondering if these could be matsutake, but I don't see a veil?

I have picked spring king bolete's before, but never porcini in the fall.  Are these them?  I don't see the "net" like appearance on the stem like I did in the spring.

Looks like a white chanterelle to me. I'd like to see the top, but the uneven end of the gills are a convincing factor.

The last one looks to be a white chanterelle, but I don't believe the first 2 are matsutake or porcini. I am no professional but have harvested quite a few of these over the years. The fall kings do typically have visible reticulation on the stipe, and when identifying matsutake, the sand on the bottom of the stipe and a distinct smell are very helpful identifiers.

The easiest way to tell if it’s matsutakes is the smell. They have a spicy smell to them that is like nothing else. When they get old the veil peels back. Also brown on the stem. However when in doubt throw it out

Another matsutake characteristic is that the butt will almost always have sand on it and there's no bulb. The butt goes down to a dull point. I see no matsutake in any of these pics.

Shroom #1 - unsure, but your inclination is correct - not matsutake
#2 - bolete family, probably Suillus (aka 'jack') given the ring on the stalk
#3 - chanterelle, though I'm inclined to say a faded golden than a white
