I wonder if this isn't an example of "frozen taxidermy". It is mentioned in ADM Perry's trip to the North Pole and there are examples of a couple pics...one of three Caribou and one of a Polar Bear in the online book. In case anyone is interested, the link is below. I guess it's where the animal is killed, placed and photographed after it is frozen.
