Mount hanging hardware?
« on: June 06, 2016, 08:55:09 AM »
I went to hang my deer mount a few days ago that I recently picked up from Michelle so I could snap some photos and show it off a bit and noticed there was nothing on the back of the deer to hang it with. I have other mounts and all had holes cut in the back with metal installed to hang with. Obviously this one will be a install hardware on plywood back type deal. Wondering what you guys would install on this thing that is sturdy and reliable? I don't want a failure and a deer mount laying on the ground  :chuckle:.

I think I would drill two holes in the plywood if it was me.  Like it should be done.

I thought about doing this but was scared I would ruin something  :dunno:. Think its safe? All my other mounts have like a 2 inch hole cut out and a v shaped metal frame installed inside the hole to sit on top of a nail or screw.

The metal piece would prevent any galling/gouging.  I bet one of the taxidermists on here could sell you one.

Cannot believe it wasn't done from the taxidermist.  Oh, wait yes I can. :bash:

I've got a bunch laying around 180-Grain if you want/need one. But yes, the best is to drill a 1.5" hole in the back just to the left or right of the center line (if the deer is a right turn you would go just to the right of the center line) and cut a tapered point at the top of the drilled hole....it looks like an up-side down ice cream cone if you do it right. I do this with my mounts (deer) and have these nice metal hangers that I affix over the hole that holds a screw head nicely. Don't know where your located at, but if you want to stop in I can give one to ya.

Great offer BRT.

I would just do something similar to your other mounts assuming they are shoulder mounts.

I can take some photos of mine at home if you don't have an example of a shoulder mount setup.

Frustrating that it wasn't done at the taxidermist but at least you have the mount back.

Looking forward to seeing the photos.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Appreciate the offer! Im in Arlington so its a bit of a haul to your place. I will try my hand at cutting the hole and I will look around for a piece of metal at the hardware store. I may be able to just make a metal piece myself. I was just a little nervous about cutting into the back of the mount.

Its pretty easy. Just take a measurement to find the center at two points (near the top and near the bottom) of the back of the board/mount. Take a pencil and draw the vertical line connecting the two to find your center. Make your drill hold approximately 2" to the left or right of the center line dependent upon which way your buck is looking. Drilling at the center line makes the mount off-center but keeping to either the left of the right corresponding to your mount makes it evenly balanced. The board should be 1/2" to 3/4" thick depending on what form your taxidermist used so when you hit foam past the board, stop. A small Jigsaw works good for the next part, which is to start at the widest point of the circular hole on each side up travel up and connect them at the top. Like before, it will resemble an upside down ice-cream cone when you done. Take a small knife and whittle our some of the foam at the point end so your screw head can sit securely at the top of the point. In all honestly this will be totally sufficient for your deer shoulder mount. A good exterior wood screw in your wall stud slightly at an upward angle will hold just fine. The upward angle and the point of your drill hole will actually suck the mount to the wall. I put on the metal piece just as a precaution with all my mounts, but its not always necessary. The bigger boys (elk, moose, bear, etc) they get big brackets. Best of luck!

There should have been a metal hanger on the back.  Hangers are always included on my mounts.  Send me your mailing address via PM or E-Mail.  I'll get one Priority Shipped to you with the hardware to install it.  There is no need to cut holes in the back.  The hanger just screws on with 3 screws.  I'll get it boxed up here in a few minutes.

I must have either forgot to install one or I took it off for another mount before yours was finished.
