West Klickitat Quality Buck Tag
« on: June 19, 2016, 07:41:53 AM »
I've drawn the West Klickitat late season QB archery tag. I would love to read a few success stories and or a tip or two if anyone would like to share.

Thanks!

As your probably aware West Klickitat is mostly private lands with a small amount of DNR Land.  I would concentrate on timber company lands. Most of these land are open with the exception Weyerhaeuser Columbia Timberlands. Most of the timber company grounds are gated. Spend some time scouting and good luck!!

I would start scouting soon before the Timber Co's close their land down for fire danger. The past two years they have been closing it down all the way until October.

There is a pile of land in the west K that is not ever closed down. along the east boarder there is a large chunk that is questionable but there is a ton along the west that hammer down.

You will find lots of Muzzy Elk hunters in there at the same time you are....

Thanks for that bit of information. I hadn't looked to see if there were competing hunts in the unit at that time... Potentially a lot of bodies kicking around😬...
Interesting that it's a Quality Buck tag with competing hunts taking place like that. The impact of the elk hunters must be minimal?

There was a deer study in the 1980's on the Klickitat Herd. The deer were collard and a % of had radio collars. They found that there were two distinct migrations periods with that herd. One in late October and the other was in late November. It was interesting that the migration happened  on years with little or no bad weather.  With your late archery tag I would concentrate on the eastern part of your unit if your looking for a trophy buck. You should catch the late migration.

Thank you! I appreciate that information.
I have spent a lot of time over the years on the Klick chasing steel & salmon in the fall. I see a lot of deer but nothing that made me go WOW! I've herd that they're around though...

Thanks again!

I've had the modern quality tag three times for west Klickitat: drew through hunter education the 1st time and harvest a nice 4x4, drew partners with 8 pts the 2nd time and harvested a 5x5 and the last a time I had a group ask me join them that averaged 10 points; while had 0.  Kind of hard to turn that invite and I did harvest a nice 4x4. I did see nicer bucks but couldn't but it together.

The opportunity is there for a great buck, but be patient. If you have access to a drift boat float Stinson down.

Good Luck

With the handle Benchleg, I would have assumed that you're the man that I needed to talk to about this hunt. 😊
