Shot does look to be above the shoulder and not in any vitals, I bet he lives.

 Only reason I can't think of why he would be carrying a can of spray paint, either marking the trail, "tagging" (not likely out there) or "huffing" which I suppose could have led to the poor decision to trespass. :dunno:

I think you are probably right about marking the trail I just hadn't heard of it before, well doing it that way anyways.
