Can I add turrets?
« on: November 02, 2016, 10:22:02 AM »
I have a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40 Long Range that I'm thinking of putting on my 300RUM and I was wandering if I can send it off and have turrets put in it specific to that caliber. If so who and how much?

thanks

Chris

Yes you can.  You should be able to put on CDS turrets (exposed), M-1 turrets (exposed) or target turrets (covered with caps)

I think it was 90.00 per turret (not sure if you want to do windage).   This was from a few years ago.

I know for sure you can get CDS turrets for the specific cartridge.  You can have them do one revolution or two, note two revolutions won't have a zero stop.  I think there are 16MOA in one turn so you should be able to calculate and see how far that will get you out.

I'd reccomend going with moa marked dials over the custom load ones, especially if you hunt different areas or times of the year and extended range is a possibility.
The custom load dials are too limiting imo.

There are lots of free or cheap apps you can get for your phone to calculate the drop for you. Plus you can get a weather meter for not much more than the custom dial costs.   :twocents:

Leupold just announced a two turn zero stop dial.

I'll second the Kenton industry idea. Have had them do a few for me. Very happy.

I did this same scope.  However mine being from the mid to early 90's needed to be sent in for a change in the dial mechanism to accept the turret.  I also had them update the front and back threads while they were at it.  Newer scopes would not need to be sent in.
It's a TIKKA thing..., you may not understand.

I have had Leupold add target type elevation turret to a dozen scopes over the years

+1  weather day to day can drastically change drop if you are looking to start long range shooting.  Custom turrets are cool and may be fine 0-300yrds, as there is less time for atmospheric conditions to alter bullet flight, but when you start reaching out you need to be using relative conditions versus your control data from practice.

Strelok is a free app you put in your smart phone.  Go out and have a good practice session.  Enter your gun, and bullet info, velocities and weather data for that session and save them all.  When you are out hunting or at a different location you just pull up the app, input current weather data and hit calculate, it will tell you exactly the drop you should see as well as your MIL/MOA adjustment to compensate on your scope.
